DEATHS AT LOW

Fatalities From Many Diseases Show Drop in 1942.

Indiana has more new: citizens today than ever before in'its history. In the past year 73,357 babies were born in the state, the highest number ever recorded, according to the annual vital statistics issued by Dr. Thurman B. Rice, commissioner of the Indiana state board of health. At the same time the number of infant deaths was but 2691 and the maternal death rate reached its lowest point, averaging 2.6 for 1000 births. On the whole the Hoosler health record for 1942 was bright. There was a marked decrease in deaths from many diseases which formerly have had a high fatality record. Tuberculosis; typhoid fever, diphtheria, scarlet fever, pneumonia, diabetes "and cerebro spinal fever

took the fewest lives that have been] !

recorded for them. No deaths occurred from smallpox and poliomyelitis ran on the average.

Auto Deaths Lowest Since 1932

The so-called’ degenerative dis- :

eases, cancer, heart disorders and bright’s for the highest number of deaths. “This is explainable by .the fact that for the most part they attack people of middle or advanced age when the organs of the body have been injured by the wear ang tear of living,” Dr, Rice said. Automobile fatalities were the | lowest on record in recent years except for 1932. “While ‘the. Indiana State Board of Health cannot take full credit for this improvement in the health of our citizens, we are proud of the fact that death from some of the

most vicious diseases has been cur-|}

tailed, and feel that in a large

measure it is due to the educational |}

programs which have been cone-

ducted in the field of public health.|| “Whether we can keep this record |F

up during war times when there is

a constant population flow and |F

crowded living and working conditions, remains to be seen. At any rate we shall try to keep epidemics under control, we shall disseminate

health information, do all in our|} power to eliminate sickness and|§}

death, and to safeguard the health of, the people of Indiana, * said Dr. Rice,
