3 ”. ‘Symphony Note THE CONCERTS tonight and tomorrow afternoon by the Indianapolis symphony orchestra will mark the faréwell appearance of a grand, old gentleman to whom music lovers in this town owe a great deal, Ferdinand Schaefer, founder and conductor-emeritus of the orchestra. ; Mr. Schaefer is retiring altogether from the orchestra which he has directed twice annually since his retirement as conductor in 1937. Dr. G. H. A. Clowes, orchestra president, has- expressed the hope that the folks who like to hear good music, will turn out full strength as a parting tribute to Mr. Schaefer. This column expresses that hope, too. Mr. Schaefer's program is the Brahms “Tragic ‘@verture”; the Beethoven “Pastoral” symphony; Mr. Schaefer’s “Introduction and Scherzo” for® strings; Strauss’ “Weiner Blut Waltze” and Wagner’s “Vorspiel” to “Die Meistersinger.”

ing force of her life), to pay off debts left by her father and onetime millionaire, Eugene Pallett. In the course of the film she becomes the darling of her patrons, who don't mind losing money to such a lovely poker player — so the press agents say. The little gal never loses, - but to one man, George. Brent, Sambler mosh Miss Lane Mixed up with the couple is the villain, Bruce Cabot, and an old standby, Lynne Overman. Mr, Cabot is cast as the lover headed for casting off. He fools the fair lady and practically absconds with her hard-earned (?) sheckels. That is—until our hero, gambler Brent, enters the picture. This is no roughhouse film as might be expected until Brent antl Cabot exchange a few blows in . the last scenes. Remember, “The Silver Queen” is a lady. The St. Clair and the Uptown will open with the picture tomorrow.

¢ ” ” 8 LEADING FILMS at the the‘aters this week-end will be “You Were Never Lovelier,” “Thunder Birds,” “Cairo” and “The Glass Key.” All will be seen on four screens. , “You were Never Lovelier” is the South American « musical boasting the 4 services of Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire. The story concerns their love life which is 3 “off again, on again, gone again” and so on ad infinitum. T he Cinema, Tuxedo, Esquire * and Talbott will show the picture tonight. The flying film, “Thunder birds,” is a pretty fair saga of the skyways with Preston Foster, John Sutton and Gene Tierney in the leading roles. It's propaganda to some extent, showing work at the famed Arizona flying field and explaining the cause of the united nations. Tierney’s the center of ye olde triangle at the Uptown and St. Clair tonight and the Fountain Square and Irving tomorrow. “Cairo” is a satire on Hollywood spy films with a cast including Jeanette MacDonald, Ethel Waters ‘and Robert Young. A radio-con-. trolled airplane headed for destruction, a Nazi spy ring and Miss MacDonald singing a high-C to uncover the mystery lend much to make the movie one of fantastic imagination. “Cairo” will open tomorrow at “the Uptown, ‘Rivoli, Strand and St. Clair.

The suspense mystery, “The Glass Key,” will grace screens at the Strand, Rivoli'and Speedway tonight and the Irving tomorrow. Veronica Lake, Alan Ladd and Brian Donlevy have the leading roles. Penned by Dashiell Hammett, the dramatic story concerns politics and a. murder solved in a surprising fashion. . 8 2 = OTHER FEATURES: The Walt
