LONDON, Feb. 5—Hounded byl

Premier Pierre Laval’s “French

militia,” at their work benches, in restaurants, on the streets, and even in their -homes, anti-German Frenchmen resist “la releve,” the Nazi version of work relief, with in« creasing difficulty and danger. But resist it they do, as authentic reports coming in to London by one means or another well establish. Germany's attempt to ,strip France of her manpower via the worker-for-war-prisoner scheme is effective only because the most drastic methods are being used both by the Germans and by their Vichy collaborationists. “Blackbirding” The setup recalls the sorry days of the “blackbirding” trade in

Africa when whole villages were snatched away for the terrible

- middle-passage journey into en-'

forced labor. But French resistance ‘to la releve shows itself variously with a vigor encouraging to French exiles here. - At Lorient the Germans recently demanded 200 skilled naval workers and these were rounded up by Laval’s militia. In an attempt to soften the blow of forced exile into Nazi war plants, the Germans arranged a lunch party fof these 200 unlucky men, such a meal as woefully rationed Lorient had not seen since the war started. 4 Flowers Added Adding to juicy meats and rare vegetables was the presence of a German military band and many

- flowers.

The toastmaster;a German major, prepared a speech in French telling how these 200 newest members of “la releve” were contributing to the comradeship between the French and German workers. But when the hour of the lunch

. came, exactly two men showed up

out of the 200—and they fled when they saw what was happening. Sputtering with rage, the Ger“mans had to clear the tables way Salve! the party. ichy police joined the Gore

tended guests and rounding them up, many being handcuffed for shipment to Germany.

Bombers Settle Problem

That night the royal air force bombers visited Lorient and settled the question of what to do with the uneaten food, : When the 200 were taken to the train, they were greeted by 17,000

persons singing the ‘“Marseillaise”

and the “internationale and shouting “Vive de ‘Gaulle, vive la France, and a bas Petain.” Attempts to find la releve volunteers in Hainaut, Belgium, failed so completely that the Germans descended upon movies and restaurants to haul men into custody by the hundreds.

BUREAUS EVER ON THE MOVE

Capital Spends More Than $600,000 Annually in Shifting About.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (U. P.).— Limited as the space is in Washington these days, government bureaus still do a lot of moving, A. W. Clime, chief of the federal works administration's service division, revealed yesterday that 1400 men are employed regularly to move government departments from one location to another-—one office to another; one floor to another, one building to another, even one side of the Potomac river to the other. The monthly payroll of the service division is about $50,000 and exceeds that figure when a larger-than-usual number of agencies is moving.

Offices Have Own Crews

An employee of the war department transportation corps said: that since he went to work a few months ago his section had moved four times, and a fifth shift is being considered. “Maybe it’s because we're called the transportation corps,” he said. Most movings are the result of augmented staffs, officials said. Some are due to consolidations. A few agencies have their own moving crews for small jobs. Sometimes “secret” or “confiden-

tial” equipment is moved. Police,

in those cases, .often rope off a block or two. : A clerk in one of the agencies which moves most frequently was asked what she thought about it. “I think,” she said, “we move more than a hula dancer.”
