Son, our minister to Australia, sf
still somewhat of a mystery. President Roosevels said that he
intended soon to make an appointment to Australia | in place of. Ed- ¢ ward J. Flynn, whose nomination was with] drawn from the ‘senate at Mr. Flynn’s request. “But the: name of ‘the new envoy ‘8 was not hinted. ee Inquiry revealed that Mr. Johnson has neither resigned from his post in Canberra ‘nor filed an application for retire~
‘ment. Apparently he is waiting to] “see what happens.
On Jan. 11—ahout the time of the president’s letter to Boss Flynn naming him minister to Australia and ambassador to the South Pacific—the White House announced that as Mr. Johnson had previously, expressed a desire to retire to pris vate life, he would now be given an
ropportunity to Ho SO.
- Why Retire Now? But why retire now? None of
~ Mr. Johnson's friends seems: to
know. He is at the very height of his career. - He is only 556. With his
~ extraordinary background and lin- ' guistic ability, he has never been
more useful than qt present. His health seems to be excellent, Mr. Johnson is said to have expressed a wish to retire while he was in"China. That is understandable. He first went to China in 1907 as a student interpreter. In one capacity or another, up to and including that of ambassador, he spent most of his career there. China, under Jap bombs, was hardly an ideal place for an unm-

‘Lives With Family
But Ambassador Johnson was given a change. He was trahsferred Australia. He now lives with his family in unusually pleasant surroundings. ‘And he is extremely popular with- the ' Australians—a fact which they left. in no doubt when it-was reported he was to be withdrawn. = Rightly or wrongly, there 1s a yidespread feeling here that Mr, Johnson: was ‘merely being diplomatic When he said he would like
to retive. If the president wanted
to appoint Mr. Flynn or anybody else in his place, that was the thing for him to say. Whether this is the real explanation or not, no one seems to know. Or if they know, they won't say. Maybe Mr. Johnson really does
. want to retire. Heaven knows he
has edrned the right, many times over. But if he is merely being “diplomatic,” many feel the president shouldn’t let him, for he has proved himself one of the finest career diplomats in Uncle Sam’s service— one who knows the whole Pacific and Far Eastern situation better

WALLAGE ASKS PEACE FORCE’
Favors Keeping 0 Order With Combination of Military, Commercial Aviation.
Times Special NEW YORK, Feb. 5—Vice President Henry A. Wallace proposed today that in the future aggressor nations be “bombed mercilessly” by a “united nations peace air force.” Writing ‘in the American magazine, Mr. Wallace said that the establishment of - such a force should be the first post-war action of the victorious allies.
He suggested formation of a post-|
war united nations investment cor-
poration to form a network of globegirdling airways for both passenger and freight traffic, but which could be quickly transformed into a protection against any aggressor na-
tions, if economic quarantine should |
fail to prevent their rearmament. Wouldn't Pay Own Way He favored such a -combination
commercial-military air force, since
a. military force alone. would ‘be a “big expense and. would not give the young men composing such a force enough to do.” He said; however, that the combination force should not be expected completely to. ‘pay its own way “on the ordinary commercial basis.” The international investment e proposes could also help to prevent world-wide unemployment after. the war, Vice President Wallace believes. He said it would put private-and public capital to work for world-wide reconstruction..
