did much about.
| And down through the years in athletics there has
been a constant search, not for a restoration of youth, but for a substi

at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night when Fritzie Zivic of Pittsburgh, a pug-nosed lad who admits to 29 years, attempts to lick Beau Jack, youthful Negro of Augusta, Ga., who is recognized as lightweight champion in New York state. Beau Jack is. only 21.
ever to toss leather, is a former welterweight champion. Buttonnosed Fritzie won his title from probably the greatest “smaller” Negro fighter in ring history. On the night of Oct. 4, 1940, Zjvic surprised the boxing world by wresting the welter crown from Henry Armstrong in Madison Square Gare den. Decision No Mistake
~-Zijvic won the title on a decision, but he proved that this decision was no mistdke when he defended the title against Armstrong on Jan. 17, 1941, and stopped hammering Henry in the 12th round. The experts accentuated.’ the smartness of Zivic’s performances in: both bouts, but they did not dwell upon the fact that Armstrong, the little “perpetual motion man” was older than Zivic and was virtually burned out because of constant campaigning. Regardless of what has happened vic since then—his loss of the to a 13-1 / underdog, Red
to
ringcraft persists. ‘He is considered generally the most knowing fighter in the “smaller” divisions, among those below ‘the middleweight group. Some say his sagacity equals that of Billy Conn, who comes from the same home town

And this is the perfect case in

Jack, the former shoeshine boy, s fo smartness in or out of the ring. For example, ‘a
Jack in his A, B, C's in the past few months, and he has progressed to the point where he now can sign an autograph. His mental contact“with the world is far different from that of Fritzie, the Pittsburgh businessman, who does his own promoting in the Smoky City and who
Zivic, who started fighting 12 years ago, tackles the young Georgia Negro, with the physical advantages of about nine pounds in weight— about 145 to Jack's 136, and stretches in height and reach. But Zivic is an old man of the ring. Throws Punches Straight
Beau Jack has the youth, and believedly the stamina and the dynamic co-ordination that goes with it. Both are good punchers. Which is the harder we do not know. Zivic throws his punches straight as an arrow; Beau Jack loops them. Unquestionably Zivic is the smartest fighter Beau Jack ever ‘met. Their tilt at the Garden tomorrow night should prove definitely whether there is a substitute for youth in fighting. It should show whether an old man of the ring can spot his younger opponent eight pertinent years and beat him. . On 49th st., at least, the smart-
& jmoney boys stress the accent on
youth by making Beau Jask the 2-1 favorite. But they have been wrong so often that their price.is inconsequential,

Bobo Says His Eye Is O. K.
PITTSBURGH, Feb.4 (U.P) — Harry Bobo, Pittsburgh heavyweight aspirant to the title of “duration” champion, claimed through his manager yesterday that, contrary to the findings of the Pennsylvania state athletic commission, his right eye was in perfect shape and that he should be allowed to fight within the state. Ed Kapphan, “Bobo’s manager, said his fighter had been ex-. amined by Dr. Joseph H. O’Brien, a Pittsburgh eye expert, and was found to have perfect vision in both eyes. He said that Leon Raines, chairman of the state ~athletic mmission, had asked Bobo to e the examination.

The Babe Spoke A Long Time
NEW YORK, Feb. ¢—New York baseball writers’ dinner, Sunday, will mark Babe Ruth’s 49th birthday. A few years ago, the dinner also fell on the Bambino’s natal day, but in a speech he became confused about which one it was, and consequently was garrulous. Later in the evening, or rather early the next morning, one of the final speakers allowed that perhaps the old home run king wasn’t certain which birthday it was when. he started to orate, but
"one when he finished.

DETROIT, Feb. 4 (U. 5) ~—Ray (Sugar) Robinson, shifty ' Negro boxer, remained the bettors’ favorite over tough Jake LaMotta to‘|day as the two prepared for their ‘{10-round bout tomorrow night before an. expected sellout crowd at Olympia stadium. Odds since announcement of the match last week have favored the Harlem fighter at from 7-5 to 2-1,
to 3-1 before fight time. "Because of heavy betting, Boxing Commissioner John J. Hettche said he would wait until shortly before the bout to disclose names of officials. In meeting LaMotta, Robinson will be seeking to extend his string of professional triumphs to 41. So far he. has knocked out 32 of his 40 opponents, flattening 16 of them in the first round.

Of All Army Buck Privates
LONDON, Feb. 4 (U. P.).—Pvt.
Billy McHale of Philadelphia, Pa.
U. S. A, was the envy of every buck private in Uncle Sam’s army today. He “beat the blazes out of a sergeant and nobody even mentioned
the guardhouse.
It happened in the rainbow corner of the Red Cross club last night in a white light and blue smoke setting that rivaled New York's
n Square Garden. McHale and Staff Sergt. ank Jones of Cincinnati went at it in the main event of the nine boxing bouts and three wrestling matches staged by the U. S. army newspaper Stars and Stripes. Staff Sgt. Jones had ‘three strikes on him to start—those three chevrons. . Pvt. McHale did the rest to the delight of an audience composed predominately of -brother privates. “Hang one on him for me,” yelled an unknown as McHale shot over a right. The private took charge and the crowd roared as he landed left and rights. “Goldbricker,” the assembled privates shouted as the woozy ser-
‘{geant clinched.
The roof shook when Pvt. McHale’s hand was raised in victory. In two other feature bouts Corp. Andy McGinty of Cleveland kayoed Pvt. Dave Greenberg, Cleveland, at 1:12 of the first and Pvt. Frank Missella, Cleveland, decisioned Pvt.
In true Madison Square Garden style there were celebrities introduced from the ring. They included British heavyweight Tommy" Farr, presented by Maj. Richards Vidmer, former New York ' HeraldTribune sports columnist. A photographer’s bulb exploded and Vidmer grabbed a broom and started sweeping up the glass, “You're sure to get the D. PF, C. now, major,” chortled a happy private. He wasn’t worried about the guardhouse. He had pleasant memories to take with him-—memo-ries of Staff Sergt. Frank Jones, a nice enough guy, but . .
