preliminaries incident to the Pep-
Friday night, which Pep won. Pep did not arrive until 6 p. m. Pep and his manager explained that weather conditions caused them to miss a train at Hartford, accounting for their lateness. Chairman John J. Phelan said under the circumstances no penalty would be assessed.
In Good Shape
The commission’s physician, Dr. William H. Walker, examined Fritzie Zivic, former welterweight champion! and Beau Jack, recognized in New York as the lightweight champion, who will meet in the Garden in a 10-round nontitle fight Friday night and pronounced them in excellent shape. Beau Jack weighed 142 pounds and expects to enter the ring at 137. Zivic weighed 149. He must Scale down to 145 or less. Matchmaker Nat Rogers of the. 20th Céntury club discussed with the commission the possibility of: staging a 10-round non-title bout’ between Beau Jack and Pep at the Garden March 5.
Some Objection
Phelan, while making no official ruling, said it was his opinion that Beau Jack would have to weigh over 135 pounds to protect
then claimed the lightweight championship. He pointed out that New York rules provide a bout must be 15 rounds to decide a title but should Pep win the press and others might, concede him the crown. ; Viscusi objected to coming to terms for a bout in which Beau Jack would weigh over 135 pounds, saying it would be too much of a handicap ¥or Pep, whose fighting weight is 127. Another obstacle in the way of - the bout, was a report that Pep would insist upon getting the same percentage of the gate receipts as Beau Jack.

i | That team had some things this
team doesn’t have. Right now this team seems to be doing pretty well, and so I'm not going to Worry about it.” The Hoosier head man does have something to say about his team’s phenomenal rise as a challenger to the great Illinois defending titlists.
Have Good Balance
¥ “We have good balance, some good rebound men, some good shooters and some outstanding passers. Our short passing game at Jowa was just as good as I'd ask for from the boys. Perhaps the most important think 'has been the fine physical condition of all the boys on the squad. We can do quite a bit of substitutinng without getting hurt too much.” The Hoosiers have a chance to tighten their grip on the Big Ten leadership this week-end in Saturday and Monday night games with Michigan. The Wolverines, always dangerous, gave McCracken and his 1939 team a rude shock in the final garie of the campaign. Michigan's 53-45 victory knocked the Hoosiers out of a share of the conference title. Indiana has taken ample revenge by winning the four tilts since then; and leads in the all-time standing; 23-11. :
Wolves Have Power
The 64 points Indiana tallied here last year against Michigan stood as the Indiana’ conference scoring standard until the hasty Hoosiers set a new all-loop mark of 71 points against Iowa Jan. 23. The Wolverines have already made a significant display of their power. After finishing their nonconference campaign with a’ clear record, the Wolverines defeated Wisconsin, one of the pre-season conference championship favorites. Although ' Michigan's opponents have’ planned their defenisive play chiefly toward stopping Captain Jim Mandler, the big center has consist ently paced the Wolverines and will be the object of Indiana’s best defensive affections here Saturday and Monday nights. Leading Michigan to seven wins in 10 starts, Captain Mandler has bagged 81 points. He is followed by the two regular guards, the veteran
.|Leo Doyle and sophomore Dave Strack. The latter is a Hoosier
hardwood product, having prepped in Indianapolis. Strack turned in a splendid defensive-job on Wisconsin’s Johnny Kotz in the Michigan victory. Doyle has caged 62 points, Strack has 59.

67 Racing Days At N arragansett
PAWTUCKET, R. I, Feb. 3 (U. P.) —The Narragansett Racing association announced today it will hold 67 days of racing this year — the same number as in 1942. State Racing Administrator John E. Martin assigned a 25-day spring meeting beginning April 10. and an autumn meeting of 42 days beginning Aug. 9 for Narragansett park. Directors of the association said they believed that racing could be conducted at Narragansett park without interference with the war effort and that the track could play a real part in assisting public morale “by offering entertainment and relaxation to war workers and men of the armed forces losted within easy distance.”
