CHICAGO, Jan. 28—Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers, who
_ capitalized on “scientific loafing” to become a gridiron success, today
was named the most valuable player
in the National Jfootball league.
The selection marked the second straight year Hutson has won
the Joe F. Carr trophy. He is the first performer ever to repeat in the| |

Relief Is Seen
For Horsemen
PAWTUCKET, R. I, Jan. 28 (U.P.) —Several hundred stranded ‘horsemen in Florida appeared certain of evacuation today after receiving assurance from two of three major New England race tracks that $5000 in transportation fees would be forthcoming. Both President Jamel E. Dooley of the Narrangasett (R. I.) Racing association and General Manager Lou Smith of Rockingham (N. H.) park gave permission for use of funds from tHe Horesmen’s Benevolent & Protective associa‘tion, an organization founded in New England to aid needy trackmen. Action followed an appeal from Treasurer Harold O. Simons of the association who asked for permission to use $5000 from the H. B. P. A, treasury and said he expected the management of Hialeah park would donate a like figure. “Things are mighty bad here,” Simons said, adding that “the *money would be used to transport horsemen north.”

Hutson’s selection was a runaway in the poll of nine newspapermen in league cities. The glue-fingered Packer end received six first place votes for an aggregate of 30 points. Only two other players received considerdtion, They were Bill Dudley, the great rookie halfback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had 18 points as the result of two first place and four second place votes and Sammy Baugh of the Washnigton Redskins, who totaled 15 points on one first place and five second place votes. ‘Scientific Loafing’ Coaches and competent critics attribute Hutson’s phenomenal play in eight seasons in the pro league to his “scientific loafing,” a phrase which describes his seeming indifference to what goes on around him on a football field. His ability to elude defense men to catch passes from Cecil Isbell can be traced to a baffling “change of pace” in running. He hes the uncanny knack of getting a step’s “jump” on any player trying to cover him. The selection committee in outlining the reasons for Hutson’s selection said: “The selection\ didn’t rest alone on his great pass-catching ability. Also considered -were his nuisance
‘value as a disrupter of enemy de-
fenses and his ability to transform the Packers into a confident, powerful aggregation in clutch situations.” A product of the University o Alabama, Hutson holds more records than any player in ‘the league’s 22-year history, His pro, grid marks total 17.

Times Special TERRE HAUTE, Jan. 28.—Final play ‘in the Wabash Valley tournament begins today, and Linton fans believe their Miners have a chance to monopolize the valley championship this school year. The Miners, who won the football crown in November, are favored by the draw in the basketball play. Most of the other favorites in the 16-team final tournament are con-
centrated in the upper bracket, with Linton seeming the strongest team in the lower half.
No ‘Soft Spots’
Favored to meet Linton in the finals Saturday night is undefeated Terre Haute State. The Little Sycamores, nowever, have no “soft spots” in their schedule for the next three days., First barrier for State is the once-defeated Bloomfield team; that game is at 7 p. m. to-

During his time with the Celtics, Holman played with the six-six George Haggerty and Joe Lapchick, the latter currently his rival at St. John’s of Brooklyn. ‘Holman re-
of the old Eastern League, who went six-nine, When word got around the circuit that a team had a giant, the rival manfdgers went out and got themselves one. Holman tells how the behemoths stood around counteracting each other while the other eight played basketball. That was that in a professional circuit, but colleges can’t go around recruiting
Most big men lack Grade A co= ordination, but Holman believes it will come with natural development. Drawing an analogy, Holman believes it is as fair to have large men in basketball, if you can find ° them, as it is to have giant tackles in football. i; Holman considers the six-foot : nine-inch Harry Boykoff as good a shot as.any overstuffed athlete he has seen, but points out that the towering St. John’s center must develop his legs and body. Nat Holman contends that nowdays you must have the tall boys if you mean to set the cage world
