Health Commissioner Asks Prompt Reporting of All New Cases.

Dr. Thurman B. Rice, commissioner of the state board of health,

today asked Indiana's co-operation in the’ early reporting of any cases of meningococcus meningitis. He pointed out that fourteen cases of the diseaSe have been reported in the first three weeks in January, which is more than the amount reported for this month during the last four years. The increase is nation-wide with more cases reported throughout the United States than there have been in this season for last five years.

Early Control Vital

“The control of epidemics of this disease depends on the early recognition and reporting of cases,” Dr. Rice said. “This is particularly important in schools and military posts where people live in close proximity, Patients should be isolated for at least two weeks after the onset of the disease. “Since this form of meningitis enters the body through the mucous membranes of the nose or throat; it is very important that the best possible sanitation and hygiene be practiced. Children and persons living in large groups should be advised of the necessity for prevention of contact and droplet infection.” The disease occurs in epidemic and sporadic manner ‘and is readily communicable in crowded living conditions among persons of lowered resistance. Children under 10 years of ‘age and young adults are particularly susceptible. Although there is no known method of artificial immunization, some success has been gbtained in its treatment with sulfanilimide, Dr. Rice said.
