how, in the dark days of the depression when the banks were closing, Mr. Schaefer kept the symphony going, digging’ down into his own pocket to pay the musicians. He is one of the men who believed that every major city in America could have and should have a symphony orchestra. The fact that today there are more symphony orchestras in the United States than ever existed in Europe is largely the work of men like Ferdinand Schaefer,
cert pair Feb. 6 and 7, Mr. Schaefer will play one of his own compositions, “Introduction. and Scherzo”; the “Pastoral” symphony of Beethoven; Strauss’ “Wienerblud Waltz”; the overture to Wagner's “Die Meistersinger” and Brahms’ “Tragic” overture. - » ” a MEANTIME, Mr. Sevitzky will present the second Young People’s concert of the season tonight at 8:30 at the Murat theater. Mr. Schaefer came te Indianapolis about 37 years ago, directly - from Leipzig. There he had been first violinist in the Gewendhaus orchestra. Over the week-end, the orchestra will play out-of-town concerts at Milwaukee and Manitowoc, Wis, and at Burlington, Iowa. s 2 = COMMENTING ON the current orchestra membership drive, a recent editorial in a county newspaper opined: “Where is the patriotic devotion that would devote that much activity to a non-war essential— when the people could do so much more good for those who need our united efforts?” What the editorial is hinting at, I think, is that the Indianapolis symplLony orchestra is a. frill which could be dispensed with for the ”duration like the cuffs on men’s trousers. That suggestion, “I suspect, won't appeal to millions of Americans who believe that the nation’s symphony orchestras represent one of the values in: American life they are “fighting for.-* Certainly no other enter-

in increasing numbers . . . . . . as guests of the citizens of Indiana who own ang operate the orchestra. It would require considerable study to dope out what particular phase of the war effort would be better served by letting the orchestra go. And yet, that is a possibility which the membership drive is trying to avert, in addition to
broadening the supporting base |
