Although the Indiana University Medical center faces the heaviest burden in its history because of the war, its hospitals continue to handle their usual number of patients, Dr. W. D. The war-created problems of the center were listed as including the stepped-up teaching program for training doctors, i military service de professional staff, precedented turnover in non-professjonal employees and greatly increased cast. of supplies. Despite the war demands, James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Hospital for Children, thee Robert W. Long hospital, and the William G. Coleman Hospital for Women, the three hospitals included in the center, admitted and treated during the past year 10,632 patients, normal number, from all parts of the state and had an average occupancy of 86 per cent. In addition to the} hospital patients, the center took care of approximately 45,000 visits to its out-patient clines, Dr, Gatch reported,

There has been no lowering of standards of medical education. The country needs doctors but it does not need poorly trained or irresponsible doc‘tors. We have. required all stu-
