CIVIL ECONOMY - GUT TO LIMITIS
Can't Stand Much Trimming Nelson Says; Lists WPB’S 4 Main Tasks.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (U. PJ. —War Produntion Chairman Donald M. Nelson said today that very little more can be trimmed from
the civilian economy under the war
effort, and that some rts believe it already has been trimmed too heavily. ; Nelson said at a press conference that the four most important problems now facing his agency are: 1. Increased production of valves, heat exchangers (cooling devices), and other parts of war weapons. 2. Proper distribution of available materials to assure expanded production’ of these parts, 3. Simplification of consumer goods. 4. Concentration of industry.
Long Range Problem
He said considerable progress has been made in enlarging the output of munitions parts and that distribution of scarce materials is proneeding satisfactorily. He added that he regarded the probable efféct of concentration of industry ‘now upon post-war economy as a long range problem, but that considerable study is being given to it. Nelson said little additional material ‘could be saved for the war effort through further curtailment of civilian economy. Nelson said that WPB experts have been at work on the simplification problem and that an overall plan, embracing shoes, clothing and other civilian goods, probably would ko announced soon.
