"Hitler's Children" : THERE ARE MOMENTS in “Hitler's Children” (Circle) that are’ superb. There are other moments with the all-too-usual corny touch. Ed Golden's picturization of Gregor Ziemer’s “Education for Death” is at once a brilliant presentation of the Nazi indoctrination system and . an obvious melodrama, The film has an interesting but involved background. In the first
place, there is Mr. Ziemer. Back in 1928, he and his wife started a school for the children of Americans residing in Berlin. Ziemer looks like and talks like a schoolteacher, an alert, pedantic man who works seven hours a day preparing his analytical news broadcasts for radio station W, He got out of Germany just fore the war with the recollections of petty and major perse‘cutions his school and his students endured at the hands of the ‘Nazi party fresh in mind. He also * came out with some observations on’ the methods the Nazis use to prevent their “wave of the future” from , washing back down the .sewer whence it came. . These form the basis of “Hitler's Children” plus a desperate romance ‘between Bonita Granville and Tim Holt. Miss Granville plays a German-born girl whose American education has made her _ American in spirit and viewpoint. Holt plays an American-born youth whose education in Germany has graduated him into the Nazi party. Both do good jobs. FJ ” »

Bonita punches Tim in the stomach and the young Nazi falls in love with her. Time passes. Bonita has grown up to become the assistant to the schoolmaster, Kent Smith. Tim, the boy with the cueball haircut across the street, has grown up, too. He's a Gestapo lieutenant, " protege to Otto Kruger who plays

citizen having been born on German soil. She is sent to a Nazi labor camp where the influence of Holt gets her a light job. Conforming for a while, the girl finally comes to the point where she can’t take any more of the education program. She becomes a rebel, runs away and, recaptured, is sentenced to flogging and sterilization. Holt stops the flogging, thereby condemning himself to death by court-martial. The wind-up is swift, unexpectedly violent. ”n #" ”
Presents System
MORE SIGNIFICANT than its ill-fated romance, obviously intended for trade, is the film's presentation of the ferocity and
lessness of the non-conformist in its grasp. Producer Golden's Nazis are not the ‘typical Hollywood brand which Errol Flynn has been pushing around with cne hand behind
his back. Instead, they are tough, clever men. They make it abundantly clear that the day ‘of hoodlum tactics is over, and that the Nazi party is now open to the keenest djabolical brains. This point, however, is badly bent at the wild west ending which follows the usugl Hollywood pattern of leaving nothing to the imagination. Once more, the men of good will are making all the good speeches, while the Nazis are
logic. But the film can't quite help that. The speeches are excellent, backed up by some lines of Goethe which Holt repeats at his death trial. It would have made an effective ending had the film stopped there. H. B. Warner as a priest delivers the most inspiring speech of the film, a speech he probably will repeat today-on the stage of the Circle where he is scheduled to appear with Miss Granville and Mr. Ziemer. Most sensational shot of the film, and probably the most shocking scene of the year, is the view of. the Nazi hospital where women who fail to conform physically, ideologically or racially to the standards of the regime are sterilized. ‘““Hitler’s Children” has had one of the most determined build-ups of any film this year. It was launched in 50 Midwest cities, centering. ahout Cincinnati, where film, radio, public officials and newspapermen gathered Thursday night to feast and toast the film and nearly everybody connected with it. WLW'’s interest in the film is in direct proportion to the build-up its ace commentator, Mr. Ziemer, the author, gets out of it and that seems to. be ¢onsiderable. RKORadio’s interest is to sell a prod-. .uct it believes timely and important. There shouldn't be much difficulty about that.

Fast, Funny
"Boy Meets Gin" Opens | 5-Night Stand. With the possible exception of
publicity tidbits from the studio
press departments, nothing funnier has been said about Hollywood than
{Sam and Bella: Spewack’s “Boy | Meets Girl.”
_ I thought the Civics production of the comedy which
‘jopened last night for a five-night
run at the little theater was the best job of entertainment I've caught there this season. “Boy Meets Girl,” built around the cinema plot of the same name, has been good for a number of laughs these
“Front Page” does to the newspaper business. And it is still good
| comedy, ;¥ Like ifs newspaper counterpart,
“Boy Meets Girl” seems to be ideal for little theater.
It Moves Fast
The Civic folk handled it with a feeling for the play’s satirical comedy and they kept it moving, sometimes a bit too fast. The tendency of some of the players to pick up their lines too quickly, as if nervous about cues, had the effect of squashing some of the gags. Every good gag in theater deserves the benefit of a short intermission before the next gag is start« ed. It takes people time to laugh. Kenneth Lemons, Fanchon Fattig and James Maxwell carried most of the comedy, with John Agnew, who played the prototype of Gene Autry, handling the part expertly enough to be quite funny.
A Great Idea
Miss Fattig played Susie, the waitress, whose oncoming child provides the two wild-eyed screen writers (Mr. Lemons and Mr. Maxwell) with a great idea: To wit, to star the child on or soon after arrival. Mr. Maxwell, a new addition to the Civic this season, demonstrated
in his first appearance on the Ala-|-
bama st. stage that he is a valuable one. Jack Hatfield, the Civic’s director, slid into a minor part when Jack Thomas was cailed out of town on dress rehearsal night.
Notable Improvement
Miss Fattig played -the ingenue nicely and Robert Harris did the juvenile with a fairly relievable British manner. Only thing I think the production needs is a radio announcer you can hear.
Hope the Civic keeps on. pitch-|
ing over the plate. There has been a notable improvement.—Richard Lewis.
Mistrial Sought in Errol Flynn Case
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 16 (U. P.). —The statutory rape trial of Errol Flynn was in recess today while
the presiding judge studied a prose- |

were selected with deceit and per-|-
jury in their anxiety to hear the case against the movie hero. The judge indicated he will rule Monday on whether a new jury will have to be chosen and the testimony repeated.
