are getting ready to:herd Marshal Erwin Rommel's| forces into Tunisia as & preliminary to the ultimate battle in which the axis will be driven out of Africa. There appears little chance’

Qther officers elected were Bruce Kixmiller of . Vincennes, re-elected

of South Bend. vice president, north, and William R. Krafft, president of the Monarch Motor]. Co. of this city, re-elected secre-tary-treastrer. Newly-elected directors include P. T. Smith,” Hammond; D. G. Wildermuth, Logansport; = Glenn Scott of Marion, Mr, Krafft of In-
South Bend, director at large. Holdover directors are Mr, Yeager of South Bend, B. J. Swanson of Ft. Wayne, Fred E. Siess of Lebanon, MS. Kixmiller of Vincennes, E. E. Nolan of Evansville, Mr. Sutter of Columbus, William Aitchison of New Castle, W. C. McLain of Andersqn and A. W. Mitchell of Michigan City.
It is possible, of course, that the French forces in south-central Tunisia might knife through to the coast at Sousse and present a barrier to Rommel's junction with the Tunisian forces of Maj. Gen, Hans Arnim. However, Rommel might fight his way through, or, foreseeing
- {the possibility of disaster, speed up|
his withdrawal and get there first. There is small doubt that Rommel intends to get out of Libya. A German announcement that the British eighth army has concentrated 150,-
-]000 men against him, whether true
or not, apparently is designed to prepare the German and Italian people for the withdrawal. If the British have that many men, Remmel ‘would-be ' hopelessly outnumbered. ;
®|. What he has been doing is to de-
lay the issue as long as he can. The axis cannot now hope to hold out in Africa indefinitely. Its strategy will be to make a stand in the northeastern corner of Tunisia, in the vicinity of the strong points of Tunis and Bizerte. There the German and Italian forces should be able to dig in for a long siege. The object in fighting for delay is two-fold. One motive is the hope that somehow sufficient reinforcements might be goiten
. |through by spring to hold the allies
at bay for many mohths. The other objet is to gain time to fortify southern Europe and make it as hard as possible to invade the strongly defended coasts of western Europe. That is Hifler’'s only hope
is certain that Hifler will fight to
the last before abandoning Africa.
