WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (U. P.).— The joint congressional economy committee will. begin an investigation next week of alleged use of government automobiles for winning, dining and shopping expeditions, it was learned today. The committee, headed by Senator Harry F. Byrd (D. Va.), will call officials of the office of price administration, -office of defense transportation, the budget bureau, and general accounting office to testify. The committee is * completing a survey on the use of government passenger cars and trucks: since February, 1942, when a similar report was made. ‘Questionnaires sent to all of the 81 federal agencies are being tabulated to show the number of cars and trucks operated, operating costs, miles traveled, number of tires held, gasoline used, names and salaries of chauffeurs, and the names of officials to whom cars were assigned. The committee’s last report, pre-

showed that 18,948 government passenger : cars. traveled - 147,659,279 miles during the first eight; months of the fiscal year of 1942 at-a cost of $3,334,312, counting only such items as tires and gasoline and not the original cost of the cars. To drive the cars, 522 full-time.chauf-feurs and 340 part-time chauffeurs were egjployed at » total salary of $1,080,643. One criticism heard recently was that government agencies need not report regularly to any central office on the riding privileges handed out for cars assigned to them. ‘All such vehicles now bear U..S. government identification ‘tags ‘and shields following a , suggestion by President Roosevelt. As a result, appearance of those cars around department stores, theaters and restaurants is more noticeable.

“Senator Brown is ideal for the extremely difficulli OPA assignment,” Senator VanNuys said. “He is well poised and well balanced and will be able to carry on friendly contacts between the legislative and executive branches of the government,

“Having served with him in the senate for six years,'I feel certain that it can safely be predicted that. his appointment as OPA administrator will ‘meet with - the acclaim and approval of all classes.” The Hoosier Democrat didn’t want to comment much on the nomination of Edward J. Flynn, Democratic national committee chairman, to be minister to Australia and a roving ambassador for F. D. R. in the South Pacific. 5 “I scarcely know Mr. Flynn" Senator VanNuys said. “If he receives this commission I hope he is successful in camying it out. 1 wouldn’t know him if he walked in the doer, because I never even remember having seen him.” Senator Raymond E. Willis (R, Ind.) joined his party colleagues in giving the razz to the Flynn nomination. -

Both senators admitted that the 109 billion. dollar administration budget was too great to give an off hand opinion about. “Passing such a tremendous budget reminds me of the woman automobile driver- who said she wasn’i; bothered by bright head lights,” Senator Willis said. *“She-explainec that ‘I just close my eyes and drive right ahead’ I suppose that is what congress will do.
