canned peas.” The committees, composed of food industry representatives and food distribution administration officials, will promptly investigate all reports of local shortages and relieve them by shipping the nearest available supplies. They are expected to be functioning within 10 days. Local scarcity of some foods does not justify widespread fear of a food shortage, officials emphasized. They said there is no reason,to doubt Mr. 'Wickard’s assurances that the United States will continue to be the best fed nation in the world. The committees will serve as a stop-gap to direct the flow of foods until direct ration of many foods is instituted. They will draw on local supplies to meet shortages, or arrange for state-wide or interstate redistribution if necessary.

NURSING HOME CONTROL ASKED:
Balz Bill Urges Regular Inspections by Welfare Agency.
A bill designed to correct evils in the administration of nursing homes was introduced in the senate today, by Sen. Arcada Balz (R. Indianapolis) under the spohsorship of the Indiana Federation of Clubs and the State Council of Women. The measure is the result of an investigation into nursing home conditions in Marion county last year. ‘It followed the alleged beating of a public welfare old-age pensioner in an Indianapolis nursing home. Under provisions of the bill all nursing homes would be licensed by the state welfare department at a fee of $25.

In order to obtain a license a home would have to be staffed by at least one registered nurse or a practical nurse approved by the welfare department, Periodic inspection of the nursing homes by the county welfare departments would be required. The measure covers all nursing homes, whether or not the patients are on public welfare lists. To qualify as a practical nurse the person must be over 21 years old and have had not less than one year of hospital training or not less than three years’ experience caring for the sick. By PHIL AULT United Press Staff Correspondent ALLIED HEADQUARTERS IN NORTH AFRICA, Jan. 7.—A strong German counter-attack has driven British forces from the hilltop positions they won yesterday 15 miles west of Mateur in Tunisia, it. was said today. The British withdrawal was made last night, it was said, and the allied force went back to its original position in the foothills. The Germans now held Djel Azzag, a 1200-foot hill north of the Mateur road, -and another hill to the north. The two positions had been in British hands for about 24 hours. Meanwhile Berlin admitted a change in command in Tunisia.
