CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind, Jan. 7. Lieut. Gen. Ben Lear, commander of the second army, last night told soldiers in the 83d infantry division here that “you will beat the Germans this time worse than you did in 1918.” , He arrived here yesterday morning for an inspection, his first return here since Aug. 15, 1942, when the division was reactivated. He disdained an escort and guard of

honor when met by Maj. Gen. Frank Milburn, commander of the division. Dashing into division headquarters upon his arrival here, Gen. Lear shook hands with friends and began a whirlwind inspection of the camp. Photographers trailing him had to run occasionally to keep up with him. Speaks to Sergeants He spoke last night to division sergeants, colonels and generals. Why he chose them to speak to, he deseribed as “my business.” He _did tell the sergeants that they “are the backbone of a combat unit and the success or failure of the unit rests largely on you.” Some of his speech, was confidential but other portions he released. One of his points was that “in the southwest Pacific we are teaching the Japs what killing is

like.”

“The tricky Jap has learned that it takes only a little time to make a trickier American,” he said. “It is my ambition for the second] army to send the greatest number of troops to theaters of war, and I want superb fighting men—physically, morally and mentally strong.” Gen. Lear emphasized the great importance of proper training. “Individuals should know before they reach the combat zone what it feels like to. have bombs explode near them, what snipers’ bullets are like, and what overhead machine gun and artillery fire sound like,

Great Need Is Leaders

“Poor leaders get men killed,” he asserted. “Our big problem is of leadership — of getting shoulder straps and chevrons on the right people. “And when you go to war, I want you to have the song of battle ih your heart,” he said. _ Gen. Lear told reporters that “the 'favorable reports I have received about the 83d have been borne out by what I have seen so far.” His stern appearance and his three-star rank scared many of the soldiers who stuttered replies to his questions. One of them gained approval from Gen. Lear because of the appearance of his barracks.

“I want to see you a non-com when I return,” Gen. Lear told him,
