POWER & LIGHT PLAN APPROVED
14 Million-Dollar Account To Be Amortized Over 31-Year Period.
Indianapolis Power & Light Co. was ordered by the public service commission yesterday to dispose of
a 14 million-dollar account carried on its books by amortizing it over a period of 31 years. In October the commission had ordered a nine million-dollar account removed by charging it against the capifal surplus account. The order was in the form of approval of the plan submitted by the Indianapolis utility and was the first major case in this state of conformance with a uniform system of accounts policy adopted by the public service commission in Indiana and in most other states. The two orders represent nearly a 24 million-dollar cut in the assets of the company as carried on the books but no decrease in the actual value of the property. Frederick F. Eichorn, commission chairmén, said, “Property values, so far as the books are concerned, will be stated on a very conservative basis of original cost.” It “will not adversely affect the company’s financial position,” ace cording to H. T. Pritchard, the utility president. “The properties of Merchants Heat & Light Co. and Indianapolis| M Light & Heat Co. were acquired by Indianapolis Power & Light Co. as of Oct. 1, 1926,” Mr. Pritchard said. “The purchase price authorized by the commission, which took into consideration the book entries of the predecessor companies and engineers’ appraisals, was then recorded upon the books of the Indianapolis Power’ & Light Co. “When it became necessary to dispose of certain entries under the new accounting system established by the commission, a thorough analysis of the original cost, con-
s | dition and history of the company’s
property was first required. After this analysis was completed, the commission was to determine, as it has now done, just how the difference between the original cost and the book value was to be adjusted and ultimately. disposed of. “The commission has previously ordered the increases resulting from

GRAIN TRADERS | MARKING TIME
Await Clarification of Si uation in Baking - Industry.
NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (U. P).— Farm products held narrowly around the previous closing levels today in quiet pre-holiday trading. All of the major commodity markets will operate for only half a session today and will be closed tomorrow, New Year’s day. They will operate normally on Saturday, Jan. 2, however. On the Chicago Board of Trade wheat rose % to 14 cent a bushel, corn was up 1% cent in all active positions, oats were off 4 cent and rye % cent lower to 1s cent higher. Operators in the grain pits were inclined to mark time, pending clarification of the situation in the baking industry which has been ordered to cut production costs despite an OPA order raising ceiling prices on flour. Cotton futures were off as much as 50 cents a bale in early dealings, but recovered virtually all of the losses prior to mid-day when prices were unchanged to 10 cents a bale lower. ‘In: the Chicage stockyards: hogs rose 10 cents a hundred-weight on the average with top grades up 5 cents to $14.50.
