| Improved Type Especially 7 Suitable for the Bathroom
By VIRGINIA HATFIELD ; Have you slipped and practically broken your neck in your bath-
tub this year? Sure.
Have you tried to buy a bathtub recently and found that they are pretty hard to get because production was stopped by order of the
WPB on Aug. 1?
Have you planned to remodel your bathroom, the most used and gbused room in your home, and heen at wits end as to what shall be
done with your old-fashioned fourlegged bathtub? Well, take a tip and investigate | Non-slip tile floors called carborundum may be installed in your bathtub or shower. That solves the ‘accident problem. Tile is not hard to get and a whole bathtub made of that material has several advantages. ‘A tile tub may be built to fit the room, the room doesn't have to be built to fit the tub. The home owner may use his own initiative as to design, color and shape of the. tub. Then, too, the old- fashioned bathtub may have its legs removed, be inclosed in tile and give the room that modern look.
Useful Elsewhere, Too
$ {The use of tile, of course, is not confined to bathrooms. It is effective on walls, floors and for worktops in the kitchen. - Mosaic tiles provide decorative touches in entrance halls and on fire facings. In fact, tile may be used most any- ‘ place. | Earliest uses’ of tile were priJnarily decorative. The Hebrews e “bricks without straw” when hey were captives of the Pharaohs Egypt. The palaces of Nebuchdnezzar in Babylonia had “burned lay floors and pavements of exPerse, beauty and coloring.” In T'S
ia, tile was used in the palaces of Darius I and Xerxes 1 for floors and wall facings. | Today war, placing restrictions on metal products, has brought a new luse for tileq It is the material for ‘construction of fire grates, which | cannot be obtained in metal. The tile” grates radiate more heat than ‘the metal ones. Although they can-
* | not stand rough handling as did
| the old metal grates, they will stand up satisfactorily if treated with care. All parts are replaceable.
Expect Good: Season
‘Dealers expect a good season this year in selling the new grates. With i fuel rationing, many home owners Iwill turn to the hearth for heat. | Those who do not have grates will | be~forced to buy them and the ! on the market will be

Members of the Tile Manufacturers’ association call their tile “Association Tile.” Through membership in the association, manufacturers are engaged collectively in efforts to advance the tilegindustry, to improve the product and its method of installation, and to broaden its use and application. A second selling: point for tile is that it is easier to take care of. It is unaffected by soap, water, steam and grease and in addition is fireproof. - A simple wiping with a damp cloth will take off all normal household dust and grime and leave the walls clean. -,Scouring materials may be used on the floor where the wear is greatest.
You Can Have It Plaid
The initial cost for installing tile is greater than that of other products, but in the long run tile is reputed to be a money saver. There is practically no maintenance. Tile needs no periodic 'waxing, polishing or other finish to protect and beautify it, because’ iv is permanently glazed. For the home owner who wants individuality in his decorations, he may even go so far as to draw up his own designs and submit them
to a tile dealer or manufacturer:

and have them reproduced in any color, and type of ‘tile he desires. He may hdve a Scotch plaid bathroom and a dainty Dutch kitchen in colors that cannot fade. So, there you have it. Tile is noted for its durability and cleanliness and on top of that, the medium is-fexible enough to be used in any decorative scheme.

BUSINESS BLDG.
Here In Line With Rest Of Nation. The trend toward empty business
| buildings in Indianapolis .is on the
upswing. Fifteen per cent of the business buildings are vacant; .office space is 11 per cent vacant, ahd vacancies ‘are increasing. ‘The figures are the result of a recent survey conducted by the apolis Real Estate board ‘and
{the American Building and Man-
agers association. They were sent to the National A tion of Real Estate boards and found to coin cide with surveys conducted in other major cities througanout the country. With the figures at hand, the na-
| tional board plans to fight the pro-
posed act now before congress to establish federal control over commercial and industrial rents.
Deny Control Necessary
N The board contends that federal control is not necessary because ‘the surveys show that with increasing vacancies, rents for business and office space are definitely going} down and that even in the most ac-
{tive defense . production centers,
commercial and industrial rents are in a stable situation. Vacancies themselves are, for the most part, a result of the war. Small businesses are closing due to lack of - material and lack of help and for the same reasons, new businesses are not being organized.
Some Renis Reduced
However, Ralph E. Peckham, president of the local real : estate board, points out that while vacancies are increasing, the picture is not a black one. He cited several instances in which Jandlords have reduced rents to keep men in business. All real estate boards maintain that commereial rents need a floor rather than a ceiling. As added arguments against federal control, they point out.that setting up administrative machinery for such a purpose would entail far more costs and waste of manpower than any possible benefits that "could be forthcoming. Mr. Peckham says that “freezing of business rents is not necessary because the law of supply and demand will take care of the problem.”

Approximately 900,000 people intend to buy or build a new home within six months after the war, according to a recent survey conducted by the U.
