Fear Plan to Censor Films
Studios See OWI Request As Move for Control.
“HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 19 (U. P.). —Film industry leaders-today studied an office of war information request for studios to send 0s of all proposed productions to the OWI for possible recommendations on deleting scenes: deemed “harmful to' the war eff The request was made in a letter gent to all ‘studios by Lowell
Mellett, chief of the OWI’s film di-
.vision. Mellett asked studio heads to submit copies of all studio treatments, synopses of all stories and ‘finished scripts which they planned to produce. “He also asked that his office be _ permitted to view pictures “in the rough,” or before films are prepared for public release. In answer to an immediate cry of “censorship” from studio spokesmen, Nélson Poynter, head of the - OWI Hollywood office, said the plan was “merely an extension of current practice and does not constitute blanket censorship.” . Industry spokesmen declined comment until the Motion Picture Pro- - ducers’ association decided upon an official reply.

Beyond a slight tendency to drag in the middle innings, the picture keeps building its mystery suspense up to the last minute, while William (Brooklyn) Bendix, the - screen’s newest hard guy, bounces Ladd around like a basketball. Tdking a cue from his success in “The Great McGinty,” Paramount put Donlevy in the part of the tough, flashy politician who has risen from promoting candidates for war chairman to picking the governor. Stony-eyed Ladd is his right-hand man, supplying the subtlety to Donlevy’s ~ otherwise two-fisted operation of a political machine. Trouble starts when Donlevy falls for the daughter of a gubernatorial aspirant on a rival ticket (Veronica Lake) and decides to sponsor the old man to win the girl. The fact that the candidate is pledged to reform the state doesn’t worry Donlevy, who orders closed the saloons which had been’ paying him ° protection to stay open. This arouses the righteous wrath of the town’s number one gambler (Joseph Calleia) and sets off a double murder in which Ladd takes a series of beatings to clear his boss, and, incidentally, to win the fair Veronica. The fil succeeds in keeping the hardness of Mr. Hammett’s characters and the deadliness of their movements to upset a delicate balance: of forces which will ruin either Calleia’s mob or Donlevy’s political machine. Up to the last minute the blocks can fall either way. ) Best crack of the picture. is pulled off by Donlevy who is arguing with one of his henchmen about getting out the vote for the reform candidate. “I don’t think the boys are going to go for if, boss,” complains the ward heeler. “They don’t like this reform stuff.” “Why not?” demands Donlevy. “Don’t they come from reform school?”

The event is free to the public and is sponsored by the office of civilian defense, the park board and matinee musicale. It’s in the nature of a Christmas music festival. Anyone who happens to be downtown can drop in and sing Christmas carols along with a trained chorus under the direction of Joseph Lautner. Gen. Tyndall, Indianapolis’ mayor - elect, will explain the idea of the program which ought to have a good deal of holiday appeal.
