Sparks, livia's oldest man, dish dinner held the same evening. ing agreement with Darlan which “would recognize him as “leader in fact” of the French in Africa, . without giving him permanent recognition. London Agrees Reluctantly Britain’s acceptance of this situation was said to have been reached - + largely through the aid of Gen. Henri Honore Giraud, commanding the French African fighting forces. Britain reluctantly recognized it was said, that Darlan had exerted himself to obtain the best results for the allies and that his rule was accepted both by the majority of French people in Africa and by all responsible military and civil authorities in French Africa, Washington believed that if a provisional government should be formed, it undoubtedly would include other prominent French figures to give it an all-inclusive political complexion. Darlan insists he has already given high positions in his North African commissariat to persons against whom the Vichy government had taken steps because of pro-allied sympathies.
How About Lebrun and de Gaulle Chief possibility along this line seemed to be Albert Lebrun, who was president of France until Marshal Henri Philippe Petain seized in June, 1940, Stockholm yesterday reported that he had escaped to * Switzerland, although the axis vehemently denied this. Chief stumbling-block in such an arrangement would be Gen. Charles de Gaulle, head of the Fighting French, who rules approximately as many French colonial territories as Darlan, Some of them, like New Caledonia, now have American troops in them just as there are American troops in North Africa. .When ' Darlan’s “conversion” to the allied cause was first announced de Gaullists made clear that they could not join him. A de Gaullist spokesman today indicated that the breach was not healed; he issued a . statement calling Darlan’s interview. yesterday a whitewash and saying that the basic situation was unchanged.
