Alcohol Contents and Sale Hours Cut; Advertising Out During War.
OTTAWA, Dec. 17 (U.. P)—~ Drinking in Canada was regulated today by a wartime temperance program reducing the amount of liquor, wine and beer for sale, limiting their alcoholic content and
| prohibiting liquor advertising.
The essential features of the program, announced last night by Prime Minister W, L. Mackenzie King, were: 1. Reduction of the quantities of spirits for sale by 30 per cent; wine, 20 per cent, and beer, 10 per cent. The base figure in each case is the e for the yeéar ending Nov. 1,1 2. Reduction of alcoholic content of all distilled spirits to not more than 30 per cent under proof. 3. Prohibition of fortifying wine with distilled spirits. - 4, Prohibition of liquorsadvertising by any medium for the duration. Six weeks were aliowed for adjusting advertising contracts, In no case will advertising be allowed after Feb. 1.

Hitler's position in Africa appears to be deteriorat-
ing rapidly now
that the British Eighth army has
further disrupted the retreating Afrika Korps of Marshal Erwin Rommel, It has been obvious for some days that Rommel did not intend to make a stand in Libya but was trying to escape into Tunisia to bolster the last hold of the axis on the African continent. Hitler's remaining hope is to hang onto the Tunisian coastal strip to protect the southern flank of Europe from allied invasion. There
seems no present prospect that he has, or can get, sufficient forces into Africa to take the initiative again. He is fighting a strictly delaying action against allied odds, which are steadily mounting, on land and in the air. Allfed strategy both in Libya and Tunisia is impressive because it is so deadly and deliberate. There has been no precipitate action in either theater. Gen. Bernard L. Montgomery is moving ahead in Libya “according to plan,” as the military phrase goes and he apparently has cut off a considerable part of Rommel’s army which may never reach Tunisia. LEE ASKS JURY TRIAL IN SIDEWALK DEATHS
John W, Lee, whose car hurtled a downtown sidewalk, killing three persons and injuring 10 others last July 20, has asked for a jury trial in criminal court. He was scheduled to go on ahs yesterday on charges of manslaughter and reckless homicide, IC '|it was cancelled by his request for a jury. A jury will be called for trial some time next month. :
