THE HEAVY HAND of Hollywood has lifted sdmewhat 3 the making of Fox's “Thunderbirds,” a film romance set at Arizona's famous Thunderbird field where united nations pilots—Americans, British and ChineSe ome basic flight training. It opened at the

|, Indiana yester A narrative gives it a documentary twist which continues on through the story. A three-cornered romance involving Gene Tierney, Preston Foster and John Sutton is the story. The picture is ‘made in gorgeous technicolor and its flying sequences are worth seeing. Miss Tierney who abandons her oriental role to play the granddaughter of a wealthy, crochety rancher (George Barbier) manages to look almost like an actress this time. Veteran flier Foster comes to Thunderbird to offer his services as an instructor, a contribution

to the war effort which places

him close enough to Tierney’s ranch to enable him to fly over it and watch her taking a bath in a water tower. Having his problems with flying is Englishman Sutton who has quit 45 a physician at a London hospital to carry on the flying tradition of his father and brother, both shot down. Sutton’s problem: He gets dizzy in the air, but he claims it’s only an involuntary reflex. which started when he fell off a horse in childhood. Naturally, Sutton goes for Tierney who, once in love with Foster, had decided to give him up, on account of the way he

bats around in his airplane and won't stay’ put. Outside of this thin story, in which Sutton learns to fly ithout looking as though he'd just tasted a large dose of castor oil, there is plenty of good humer in a Red Cross class which works out on the ‘cadets and on old Barbier. A-fine script which emphasizes the united nations cause and hope for a durable peace makes this picture a lot better than what you would expect. The light touch is supplied by William Wellman, director, ‘who has weeded the corn out of this colorful patch. 8.8» ’ THE INDIANA'S second feature is “That . Other Woman,” with Virginia Gilmore and James Ellison,

» s " 'Saludos Amigos’ WALT DISNEY'S “Saludos Amigos” (Hi, Pal), which R. K. O. plans to release in January, was trade-screened here the other day and baffled nearly everybody who saw it. . A highly artistic job, in spots, it turns out to be a kind of animated Cook's tour by the Disney artists. Best features of the one-hour series of “impressions” of South

. America are the cartoon se-

quences made up of aspects of South American life which impressed the Disney staff. For instance, e mail plane service over the Andes inspired an amaz= ingly good cartoon about a family of airplanes in which the little baby airplane carries the mail when papa airplane gets wu cold in his cylinderhead. Donald Duck and several other Disney characters, plus a new one, Jose Carioca, a parrot, appear in Latin American settings. Scenes shift from cartoons to actual landscape photography. The feature which is supposed to help cement pan-American relations is so disjointed that many previewers suspected that it would eventually be cut up into Disney comedy shorts.
