Woman's Viewpbintes Protests the Nazi-fying’ Of Education

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Times Special Writer

ALTHOUGH WE ARE NOW gaining military victories there are signs that Hitler is still defeating us on the psychological front. We have, for example, the recent speech of Gen, McNair, which

sounded like: one of Goebbels’

Maury Maverick of the war produc-

military camp. It was to be expected that the, draft of 18-year-old boys would be followed by a wave of propaganda designed to wipe out liberal arts education, but we hardly expected it to follow so fast. Now the trend is clear enough so we cannot be mistaken. Unless we swat the idea at once we may see our colleges and universities become the breeding grounds for a robot race. And don’t scoff at the notion, friends, because, when Mr, Maverick says that “all education which doesn’t contribute physically and spiritually to the winning of the war should be dispensed with for the duration,” we are being conditioned to Nazi ideals, whether or not Mr. Maverick realizes it. 2 ” 8 WHEN WE CEASE to think of education in terms of intellectual achievement—a development of the power to think—and regard it only as a means of acquiring skill in science and mechanics, we shall have precisely the same sort of school system which Hitler set up when he came into power and which we so short a while ago went to war to destroy. If we follow such advice and the war lasts five years the adolescents could come out of it very good little Nazis. In war time we should obey when Washington tells us what to do, but when the bureaucrats begin telling us what to think, it’s time we r'ared up and talked back to them. With our colleges turned into military camps and our high schools teaching only vocational training we shall be fighting our enemies by making ourselves into their likeness.

Beauty—

A Parable for Soldier's Wife

By ALICIA HART Times Special Writer SO YOUR HUSBAND'S at camp and it’s highly uncertain if and when you can visit him—and you muddle along, tense and planless? So you're happy but desperate when you realize you're leaving in six hours. You cancel your appointment with the hairdresser, buy necessities helter-skelter, pack in a terrific rush, and get on the train or plane in a heap. Without thinking of washing your face or tending your looks, you try to sleep . . . in the morning plough through those scrambled suitcases in search of toothbrush and cleansing cream, and barely get ready to alight at the proper station. And it surprises, hurts you a little, to note from his expression of concern that you look as if you had been in battle. Something like that will happen if you don’t get off to a. peaceful start.

» 2 » 80 YOU RECOGNIZE now that the uncertainty of your going is good reason for having it planned and prepgred. So you shop for necessities, ‘both traveling clothes and makeup, today, and you keep your appearance up to standard. So you get on the train or plane without excess baggage but with essentials in order . . . your makeup case or even a box complete with cream, toothbrush, soap, night and cleansing creams handy, and a washcloth or lotion for a quick freshening in the morning, You arrive rested and composed, and you get off at the station ready to begin enjoying your visit at the beginning. And you're surprised and pretty proud, to note by his gladness and relief, that you look as if the rigors of wartime hadn't and couldn’t touch you at all.
