LONDON, Dec. 17.—Thousands|:

kind of land mine and bobby trap —carefully planted during the months after Gen. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Africa korps re-
captured the El Agheila and Mersa |§ Brega position—are giving the 8th|3
army’s main advance forces plenty of trouble as the Germans hourly
withdraw further westward toward |{
Misurata. : British sappers have been able to open narrow channels across the salt flats along the Gulf of Sirte enough for fast mobile units to
maintain rearguard whipping con-|§
tact, but heavier units must cary out the pursuit with the greatest caution. Rommel’s calculated plan for abandonment of El Agheila without battle finds Italian troops left in the rear as a delaying action screen.
Guard Against Trap
The important question now is where Rommel is going to make his stand. Is he seeking to draw the 8th army into trap prepared near Misurata, following his own consolidation with the Tunisian commander, Gen. Walter Nehring, thus drawing on the concentrated strength of the German army in 4 Tunisia and easing his own supply

which records sunshine, rainfall and wind direction and velocity.
Montgomery's quartermaster headaches? Certainly, Rommel’s withdrawal from El Agheila, starting Dec. 13, was part of a carefully designed plan. His decision may have been forced by the intensive allied air offensive of 10 days ago, driving German airfield operation as far back as Nofilia (90 miles west of El
and fighter pilots a chance to harry the ground troops. Some observers here see a possibility that Rommel may be heading for the so-called Mareth line over the Libyan border to Tunisia where he would have the advantages of the port of Tripoli, plus right flank protection via the long narrow lake
The French constructed this Mareth line when Mussolini began eyeing North Africa. Meanwhile, regardless of where Rommel has elected to make his stand, the 8th. army must proceed with the greatest caution—rapid enough to keep contact with the rearguards but above all slow enough to avoid devilishly cunning
