WAR m0 STEP Ip Observers See Increased Tempo as Japs Build
Munda Point Base.
. U. 8. BASE IN SOUTH PACIFIC, Dec. 14 (Delayed) (U. P.).—The tempo of air warfare ‘in the Solomon islands can be expected to increase, military observers said today, because of the new Japanese airfield at Munda point, on the northwestern tip of New Georgia island, 150 miles west of Guadalcanal, ~ The united nations hold marked air superiority in. the southeast Solomons, but the new Japanese
field may lead to a slugging tontest involving both bombers and fighters.
’ Bombers Get Escort
Pilots who recently reconnoitered and bombed Munda point said the field, which has been under construction for more than a month, appears to be able now to accommodate only fighter planes. The runway stretches through a clearing in . & cocoanut grove. This .may mean that Japanese bombers, coming down from Rabaul and Buin, pick up a fighter escort there en route to Guadalcanal. Japanese fighters based at Munda point would be in strategic position to harass American bombers en route fo attack such key enemy bases as Buin, Rekata bay and Faisi. Tremendous Japanese plane losses in unsuccessful bombings indicate that.the enemy now may seeking a new plan of aerial warfare, with some fighter support for the bombers.
WON'T BUY BOND, GIVES CAUSE $400
BERNE, Ind., Dec. 16 (U. P.).— Harry Neil, Adams county war bond bay allotment chairman, is looking forward to another visit from an Amish gentleman who still hasn't bought a bond. Neil tried to sell the Amishman a bond, but met polite refusal. To do ~ 80 would be against the Amishman’s religion. Neil asked the man what he would do if the axis came into power in America and abolished free religion. He would move to another country, said the Amishman. But where? That stumped the Amishman. Next day he walked into Neil's office. He still couldn’t buy a bond. But he handed over a $400 check. “This is a donation,” he said. “Not an investment.” And he promised to come back in three months with a bigger check.

Deaths in Pacific Below Expectancy
WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (U. P.). —Rear Admiral William Chambers of the navy medical corps, just returned from the South Pacific, reported yesterday that the mortality rate among wounded evacuated from the Solomons to mobile - hospitals remains below the normal expectancy. He said the major share of credit for this situation was due to speedy evacuation of the wounded to fully-staffed, wellequipped hospitals, sulfa drugs, blood plasma, tetanus toxoid and efficient doctors and hospital corps men. Rear Admiral Ross T. McIntire, navy surgeon general, reported last month that the mortality rate among wounded evacuated from the Solomons was only 1 per cent for the first 1000 men. This compared with a normal expectancy of at least 5 per cent. Admiral Chambers did not cite statistics, but he indicated that this favorable showing is continuing.
