Knox Has No Information On Report American Mine Sank Transport.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (U. P.).— Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox sald today that a nayal board of inquiry is investigating the circumstances surrounding loss of the liner President Coolidge, which was sunk by a mine in the South Pacific recently.

Knox, asked at a press conference about reports that the Coolidge had : [struck an American mine, said he had no information on that. “Eventually we will get the full story of whose fault it was,” he said. “But there is a question of possible fault.”

Carried 4000 Troops

The President Coolidge was under charter as an army transport and ! thad~ 4000 troops aboard when it struck a mine. Only four men were lost. When a reporter suggested that the small loss of life indicated that the ship was close to shore or in port and therefore had hit an American mine, Knox replied:

“It is a very reasonable implication that the ship was close to shore but as for the later part of your conclusion that might not hold true.” He pointed out that a Japanese submarine could strew mines in the same waters where American mines were located.

Down in Solomons

Asked for a more specific location of the President Coolidge sinking, he said the vessel went down in the Solomons area. Discussing recent American aerial assaults on the new Japanese air base at Munda in New Georgia island, 150 miles northwest of Guadalcanal, Knox said that “we're watching that place pretty closely.”
