and two honorable mentions in the plant production drive. Mr. Kautsky liked everything

“When you go into the office of the president you. would naturally expect ‘a good deal of reserve on his part,” he said. “But when we got in there, Mr. Roosevelt's smile was so broad and his handshake so cordial that he put us all at our ease right away. <

Felt at Home

All the war production officials and employees made him feel right at home in Washington, Mr, Kautsky said. “They all seemed interested in what we had to say. They really wanted to know all about us and our production ideas. And in return

| they talked freely about what was

being done in their departments. Those conversations, and what I saw of them at work, were what convinced me that a lot of us war plant workers have the wrong idea about Washington.”

Only once was Mr. Kautsky uncomfortable. That was when he was handed a script to guide him in his remarks before WPB Chief Donald: Nelson’s luncheon honoring the 10 productioneers. “They were trying to help me because they knew I hadn't come prepared to make a speech,” Mr. Kautsky said. “But that script just wasn’t written in the kind of language I talk, so I knew I wasn’t going to be able to use it. “Finally I jotted down the points they wanted me to make on a little card and slipped it in my pocket. Then I forgot all about the card until after I had given my little talk, I found it there later.”

PLAN CAUCUSES ON ASSEMBLY PROGRAM

Republican leaders today began to plan for pre-session caucuses to complete the party’s program for the 1943 general assembly. State party heads indicated at the close of the second policy committee meeting yesterday that the general caucuses might be scheduled for the week between Christmas and New Year’s, provided such a time meets with the approval of Republican majority members of the house and senate. At yesterday’s meeting committee members heard several representatives of labor and agricultural groups but said little had evolved as yet in the way of actual pro. gram bills. It was understood the actual legislation would be drafted! in the caucuses. | State committee secretary Claude

PEARL HARBOR, Dec. 15 (U. P.).—Capt. Foss, 27, marine corps pilot of Sioux Falls, 8. D., has shot down 22 Japanese planes in 50 flights during a six-week period in the Guadalcanal area to become the leading ace of the Pacific fleet.

Navy headquarters here announced that Capt. Foss’ record was established in flights from September to November as leader of the “flying circus” flight in the squadron commanded by Maj. Leonard K. Davis. Maj. Davis’ unit was credited with shooting down a total of 110 enemy planes during the ‘Same period. Fight Lasts 30 Minutes Sixteen of the planes downed by Capt. Foss personally were Japanese zero fighters. Enemy crafts downed by his “flying circus” total 47, the navy said. Capt. Foss said that, on Oct. 23, When the first wave of 16 Japanese bombers and 20 fighters tried to attack Henderson field, “our outfit of Grummans got 11 zeroes and two bombers.”

“Later we took on 23 zeros in a dog fight—a regular squirrel cage—
