Hitler Forces Allies to Travel Great Distances

To Reach Fronts.

MOSCOW, Dec. 15—The difficulties under which Hitler has forced the united nations to maintain even such circuitous routes as are left— so vital 'to the continued war effort—are almost unbelievable, They involve depots in steaming malarial jungles and in burning desert villages which, appear only in the largest scale atlases. They include hazardous ; flights over almost uncharted regions of great rivers, snowcapped mountains and vast expanses : of wasteland. Most of all, they involve the continued waste of invaluable time i which can per‘haps be offset, but Mr. Nichol never recovered. Censorship and security reasons make it impossible to describe the exact routes, but no violation is involved in saying, that the journey includes some awesome moments and others of great beauty. : Knows Torpedo Fury

One remembers a huge convoy wallowing in a screeching Atlantic gale while 50-foot waves carried away life rafts; or the phantomlike tropical moonbow; or the helpless thrill of watching two phosphorescent streaks racing squarely for a tiny cargo ship’s side .. . ten feet away they turn and become leaping porpoises in the night—one draws a deep breath, aware that the mate does the same. “Torpedoes look like that,” he says with the authority of a man who has already been “bumped” twice,

“Somewhere,” one recalls a celebration involving the whole crew when the steward’s tiny, stuttering radio brought word of the North African landings, or the 10-inch, red-throated, green lizard which appeared on a hotel balcony each morning to share breakfast sausage, gulping viciously the bits thrown to him. Travel in Circle How nearly Hitler and Nazis succeeded in splitting the united nations, drive a great wedge between the principal fighting fronts and the sources of supplies, becomes strikingly apparent in the long, tedious journey from London to Moscow. The two great capitals are separated by a distance which might be covered in 12 hours in a speedy modern plane. Unfortunately, such a route is closed. One is compelled to make a great circle three-quar-ters of the way around the area Hitler either controls or has neutralized as a result of his conquests. It required nine weeks almost to the hour for this correspondent to|: cover that distance with only enforced delays. If anyone ever doubted the importance of controlling Africa—and there were some who did—such a journey would remove all uncertainties.

Diverted Air Routes

The Nazis sensed the strategical value at the moment when they realized that Great Britain would not collapse under the hammering blitz and threatened invasion in the fall of 1940. It explains their stubborn determination to remain there now. Before he was checked, however, Hitler drove even the aerial supply routes to the equator and beyond while sea traffic was diverted almost of the polar ice cap. The United States is sadly and bitterly aware of the havoc U-boats can create: while operating 2000 miles from French bases. A foothold on the African Atlantic coast would have made another Murmansk route out of the way around the cape.
