on the health angle, it appears from
England’s experience. Milk and dairy products there have been short and have been rationed practically since the war began. -But there are no signs of malnutrition in the country and the health of the children has actually improved. Sir John Boyd Orr, director of the imperial bureau of nutrition, now visiting in this country. is authority for this last statement. Children and expectant nursing mothers, of course, are on the priority list for milk. When supplies were at their lowest, their ration was a pint a day. The British pint, Sir John pointed out, is 20 ounces, instead of our 16 ounces. The rest of the population got about onehalf pint, that is 10 ounces, per day per head, if the supplies could be stretched that far. Vegetables and whole grain cereals and bread apparently supplied the population with the minerals
his own garden or in his allottment in a public park, garden or other public land.
All bread now sold in England is wholemeal bread. It is called the national loaf and is made from 85 per cent extraction flour, thus supplying almost all of the minerals; vitamins and protein of the wheat berry. Oatmeal gets a big hand from Sir John for its contribution/to national nutrition. The En have increased their consumption of this nourishing - cereal by 75\ per cent. Besides its high nourishing qualities, oatmeal has the advantage that it can be grown much north than many other The milk cow has - ority in Britain for feed, Sir John said, because of the overwhelming importance of milk for health. Production of meat, eggs and bacon in Britain has been decreased, but milk production has increased,
