BRITISH REVEAL
“NEW BEF STORY
$8,000 Troops Sent to]
Greece. May Have Saved
Moscow and Leningrad. By VICTOR GORDON LENNOX
Copyright. | The Chicago Daily News, Inc. { LONDON, Dec. 11.—The British r office today issued a 60-page poklet telling the epic tale of the imperial expeditionary force dispatched from Egypt to Greece in February, 1941, as Britain, now jbined by by the United States, is locked in a new battle for control
the Mediterranean. #The booklet describes the long rguard action of the 1942 army the side of three Greek divisions, sulminating in the withdrawal to ete at the end of April, the : attling against overwhelming air riority to hold Crete, and the al ewacuation "to Egypt at the ph of May. = The Greek expedition ranks with| znother British reverse — Malaya/| and Singapore—as the most publicIy debated of all military operations.
58,000 British Troops
After reviewing all the evidence, the war office today fully justifies the expedition on military. grounds alone, quite apart from the fact that honor seemed to demand that Britain aid Greece. “It is claimed’ that the enemy’s losses amounted to 6000 killed and 11,000 wounded—all crack troops. In addition the enemy forces used 1400 or 1500 aircraft, suffering heavy losses. Those forces were diverted at a moment when: the enemy staff was planning’ other = operations, notably an attack on Russia, and Hitler probably was forced fo aban- - a drive on the Caucasys through Turkey. “In addition, time was gained to : correct dangerous and fricky situations in Syria, Iraq and Iran. .The war office concludes that, though a military defeat, the Greece and . Crete campaign may come to be seen as a strategic victory. Military circles here certain1¥ have long contended that the attack on Russia was put off no less than a month, which probably saved Moscow and Leningrad. It is revealed in the war office booklet that Gen. Sir Henry Maitland Wilson's force dispatched to greece consisted of 58,000 soldiers— one British armored brigade, one New Zealand and one Australian division. The Greeks were equipped only with weapons made in several
countries from which ammunition {-
cbilld no longer be obtained. They had no tanks,
Outnumbered 10 to 1
{The whole story shows an overIming enemy superiority in niimbers and equipment, frequently amounting to 10 to 1. iAfter reading the war office acunt, one is amazed that defense uld have been maintained so long. “The graphic account recalls the exploits of the ‘royal navy in organizing and covering the retreat to Crete. When the Germans attacked the island on May 20, the defenders numbered more than 27,000 imperial troops, plus 11 Greek battalions. Their failure to hold Maleme—one of the three available Crete airports —clearly undermined the whole defense scheme. The report states that 650 troop carriers, each carrying from 20 to 30, men were used regardless of losses. Eventually 16,000 men reached Egypt's safety,
SENDS FLAG FROM AFRICA TO FATHER
Times Special CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. Dec. 11—The small American flag is soiled, and wrinkled and torn. “But Lieut. Col. Cleon L. Williams, ‘cémmending the third battalion, 385th" infantry, wouldn't take $1000 fo rit. «It arrived in the overseas mail the other day from his son, Cleon Jr, who is serving as a second lieutenant “somewhere in North Africa” and was worn on his sleeve as a mark of identification when American troops landed in Algiers. “It’s wrinkled and torn, dad. But we had to hit the ground a lot,” the lieutenant wrote significantly. « Lieut, Col. Williams’ family nearly amounts to a one-man gang in pursuance of defeating the axis. Another, son, also a ‘second lieunt, {s serving with the armored ces somewhere in the: South Pa-’ fic. The colonel is a veteran of fe last war and carries a piece of irapnel in his-elhow as a souvenir having participated in seven .major engagements in world, war Y.

‘PRIORITY’ AIR MAIL RULED OUT
Postal Dept. Refuses to Issue 16-Cent Stamp to Speed Delivery.
Times Special WASHINGTON, Dec. 11.—Postal officials have turned down a suggestion that might have brought in more revenue and might have given patrons of the air mail a guarantee that their letters would be transported speedily. The proposal came from the West coast, where much difficulty has resulted from the wartime practice of throwing air mail sacks off airplanes to make room for priority passengers. It was suggested that the post office department issue a “priority air-mail” stamp, to sell for perhaps 15 cents. The “priority” letters would be sacked separately from letters bearing ordinary 6-cent air-mail stamps.
This plan won't work, a post office department official said, “Because nothing the post office department can do will change. the wartime right of the war department to use all the carrying capacity it needs on any passenger-mail plane.” The public should not ‘be too much: concerned, he said, about the chances of ail mail being delayed.
air-mail sacks may be thrown off at airports, the chances are much greater that this will not happen— and the delay is a minor hardship of civilians.
