PRISONERS DUE
Britain and Canada Agree To Earlier Date Than That
Urged by Swiss.
LONDON, Dec. 11 (U. P)— Britain will strike the shackles from German prisoners in the British Isles and Canada tomorrow in response to a suggestion by the Swiss government made simultaneously to the governments of King George, VI and Germany. The Berlin radio today said only
giving ‘due consideration to the proposal, but most observers had no doubt the Germans would soon follow suit since both nations were regarded as tired of the series of reprisal manaclings which began
German prisoners taken in the channel island and Dieppe raids were bound.
Date Moved Up 3 Days
Indication of Britain’s readiness to-end the dispute was given in the announcement that although) Switzerland had suggested simultaneous unmanacling on Dec. 15, the British and Canadians are taking the aetion tomorrow without waiting for Berlin’s answer, It was not ' known whether the chains would be put on again if Germany did not remove the shackles from the Dieppe prisoners. The total number of German prisoners shackled in Britain and Canada has not been revealed, but it was described as approximately | the same as the number of British and Canadian prisoners manacled in ! German prison camps—107 officers § and 1269 men, according to the ! Germans.

Improving our domestic economy while awaiting possible action in the nation’s armed forces, young men in a home economics class at Technical high school these days are demonstrating+how to “stretch” one pound of butter into two. Frieda Ann Bach, home economics teacher at Tech, says the boys are proud of their kitchen accomplishments and have devised the following butter-saving recipe “to help the war effort.” Ingredients: One pound of butter or oleo; ore envelope of plain gelatin; one-fourth cup of cold

Cut butter into small pieces. Place it into a dish over hot water until it is soft. Gradually whip the dissolved gelatin into the butter ‘with a rotary egg beater or .electric mixer. After the milk is beaten into the butter, add salt to taste. Pack in a dish or container and place in a cool place until hardened. Coloring may be added if desired.
OUSTED AS. CONSUL
BERN, Dec. 11.—Vichy authorities | yesterday removed Gen. Maxime Weygand’s personal friend and former assistant, Count Pierre De-| leusse, from his present functions as French consul in the Swiss town | of Lugano. MANY AIR BASES
In Repair for Ultimate Drive on Japs.
_ By ROBERT P. MARTIN United Press Staff Correspondent CHUNGKING, Dec. 11.—China] has tructed and is maintaining a network of hundreds of modern
forces can thrust against the Japanese flank, it was revealed today. When Generalissimo Chiang Kalshek’s own air force was more a dream than a reality, the Chinese realistically built the air fields at strategically located points throughout the unoccupied territory in’‘anticipation of the day when they could be fully utilized. From these excellent bases, the allies could reach every major Japanese base on the continent and might even send their bombers to the island kingdom. These objectives await only the arrival of planes, supplies and -equipment in greater quantities. The Chinese work tirelessly to keep these airdromes in good condition. I saw the Japs dfop a string of bombs across one field, and within two hours the holes were filled and the runways repaired. Within eight hours, the surface showed no! signs of bombing. Ground Fighting Static Without these contributions, the United States air force in China would be hamstrung. The war in China, for the moment, is confined to the stabbing, hit-and-run thrusts by the gallant American airmen under Brig. Gen. Claire L. Chennault. All ground fronts are stabilized, with neither the Chinese nor the Japanese in position to carry out a major campaign, excepting on the Yunnan-Burma front, where both are poised against the most advantageous time to attack.
