Bs ‘SOME progress toward the clarification of the St. 22 - Paul baseball situation was made the other day as St.
Paul busingssmen expressed an interest in purchasing the franchise from Walter G. Seeger, but further action has ‘been delayed. . John J. McDonough, mayor of St. Paul, is trying to save the franchise for his ‘tity, and his committee, formed to work out some plan to’ insure’ retention of the club in. the American association, will meet with. Owner Seeger and a group of St, Paul: businessmen at a later date in a session that may goa long way toward determining the fate of the Saints who have been ‘in the league since 1502, thie year 1t organized. A Besides the mayor, the committee includes Milton W, Bris | president of the St. Paul association; Fred Fellows and Art Eggert of the association and W. J. Hickey of the St. Paul Winter Catnival association. Meanwhile, Owner Seeger, pressed by Omaha interests for an acceptance of their offer to purchase the club and move it to the Nebraska city, is holding out with the hope that something will develop to continue St. Paul's long membership in the league, . © Omaha would only add to the league's transportation difficulties and its park has a iow seating capacity. . . . St. Paul and Minnes form a choice setup for wartime baseball transportation, since Bistting clubs play in the two cities on one railroad fare,

from his native Springfield, Mass., Doyle was the intimate of such sports celebrities as Christy MathYewson, Diamond Jim Brady, Willie Hoppe and heavyweight champions since the reign of John L. Sullivan.
Picked Tunney Fight
Born in Springfield, March 9, 1876, Doyle worked seven years at the racetracks as a sheetwriter after |arriving in New York. In 1806 he met the late John McGraw and, in partnership with McGraw and Jockey Tod Sloan, opened a billiard | parlor which became the headquar-
‘| ters of New York's sporting element.
He prided himself on being ‘one of the few” who picked Gene Tunney to defeat Jack Dempsey for the heavyweight crown in September, 1926. . | Closing his billiard academy in 1937, the little Irishman continued to fix the odds on all major sporting events. By this time he had become legend as “Honest John” Doyle, a percentage man who would lay odds on everything but horse races. ‘Even London bookmakers aroused him in the middle of the night to obtain prices on yacht races.

: ; Tigers Abandon ® : : , Minor Leagues DETROIT, Dec. 10 (U. P.).—The Detroit Tigers today abandoned minor league baseball, at least for the duration, and arranged for the
liguidation of two clubs owned out-
right in the Texas and Piedmont leagues. General Manager Jack Zeller announced that the Beaumont club of the Texas league would be turned over to Ernest Lorbeer, a Detroit scout. Lorbeer, president of the Exporters last season, may continue operation of the club with the help of Beaumont businessmen, Zeller said. For more than a'’decade Beaumont has furnished the Tigers with many of their stars, including Hank Greenberg, Rudy York, Linwood (Schoolboy) Rowe and Barney McCosky. The franchise of the second club, Winston-Salem, N. C., in the Piedmont league, has been turned over to another Tiger scout, Zinn Beck. This club has been a Tiger farm for the past two years. Further retrenchments will reduce the Tigers scouting staff to three men, Zeller said, because “the immediate future of haseball doesn’t
deal of work for scouts.” ‘
However, the Tigers will continue |®
