Hedy in Darkest Africa

THE HEAT is terrific, see? Walter Pidgeon, he is going mad, Bramwell Fletcher, he is already off his beam. He is leaving the rubber plantation. It has got him. He insults Pidgeon. Pidgeon insults him: Old Doc Frank Morgan takes another drink. A curse rings through the bush and dies on the sultry wind.

a white linen suit. Pidgeon groans and screams. Fletcher, he insults Pidgeon. Old Doc, he takes another drink." Life in the jungle, mutters Pidgeon between clenched teeth, itll get yeu. First you don't shave, then you don’t wash, then you start to drink. The dry rot seeps into your soul, see? Like this. Pidgeon tears up a log supporting the roof. Pretty soon, in pads Hedy Lamarr, sultry siren of the tropics, in her lurong, which is a sarong with no midriff. Whistles, cheers from the audience. It wasn’t heat that drove poor Fletcher mad, warns Pidgeon, it. was Hedy. Carlson insults Pidgeon. Pidgeon insults Carlson. Old Doc Morgan takes andther drink. The steamboat whistles as it departs. Africa closes in. Hedy closes in. For a while, it’s tough going, but Carlson manages to get Hedy out of his bungalow. But the sun and the heat and Hedy do their dastardly work. Africa is getting Carlson. He is no longer washing out his socks every night. He is forgetting to shave close. He is sinking down, down. Carlson insults Pidgeon. Vice versa. Repeats for Old Doc Mor=gan. Repeat insults. Repeat Hedy slinking around. Repeat the heat closing in: Pidgeon, he can’t stand it. Carlson, he can’t stand it. Old Doc, he can’t stand it. How it all ends, don’t ask me. I couldn’t stand it either.

Tyrone the Pirate

TYRONE POWER and his gang prowl the Spanish Main in “The Black Swan.” Pieces of eight, he’s 8, pirate, It’s in gorgeous technicolor. Buckets of blood and clashing sabers all over the deck. Maureen O'Hara swoons. Tyrone bares his chest like the nasty pirate he is. Maureen thinks he’s no gentleman, but he is, even if he knocks her down, kicks her, then lifts her over his head and dumps her into the bilge when he meets his old pirate playmate, Laird Cregar. Miss O'Hara sure takes a beating in this picture. Incidentally, the “Black Swan” is a pirate ship and it steals every scene in which you see it plow=ing majestically along the blue Caribbean flying the jolly roger. I am not sure what happens in this picture. Everything is kind of mixed up between pirates who want to go straight and: pirates who just want to keep on being pirates. Laird Cregor, head pirate, pulls out of the racket because he thinks Spanish Main -is through. It’s law and order now, he tells the boys, and proceeds to become governor of Jamaica. Cregar, Power and Thomas Mitchell decide to get into the political game and run Jamaica, but George Sanders and his gang go on being pirates. It’s a fight to the finish, cannons booming, masts crashing, ships sinking, O'Hara bound and gagged as Sanders’ prisoner waiting her fate. In the end, she is snuggling up to Power by the rail, calling’ him “Jamie Boy.” 2 = = Lh SUMMARY OF YESTERDAY'S EVENTS: At Loew’s......“White Cargo.” At the Indiana. .“Black Swan.” In this department |

Wage Debate Stars Chimp

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (U. PJ). —This busy wartime capital refuses to be drawn into the controversy currently agitating Hollywood, towit: Is Chita, the Tarzan chimpanzee, an actor or an animal? The question arose when Producer Sol Lesser, who is making a film

. | starring Chita and Johnny Weis-

muller, turned down a salary raise for the talented chimp. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Chita’s owners, pointed out that their contract stipulated a raise was to go into effect for Chita Monday. Lesser countered that actors’ salaries are frozen. M-G-M objected that Chita is an animal, not an actor. Lesser announced he was sending a telegram to economic stabilization director, James F. Byrnes, for a ruling from Washington. At Byrnes’ office today it was said that no telegram has yet been received from Lesser. And if the telegram arrives, officials added grimly, it will be referred promptly back to Los Angeles, where Hugh Ducker, chief of the salary stabilization unit for that area, knows all about actors, animals and their salaries.

Coward Film Is Delayed

Vulgar Terms.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 10 (U. P.).— The trans-Atlantic dispute

Coward’s film, “In Which We Serve,”

and England, source said today.

in Britain’s house of commons yesterday, when Minister of Information Brendan Bracken told members that the film had been upheld in tthe United States because of the “squeamishness and old-maiden-aunt-like apprehensions of Hollywood censors.” Charles Francis Coe, vice president of the Motion Picture Pro-

ducers and Distributors’ association, commented that “apparently the minister had not seen the picture when he made his statement.” Other industry sources said the word “damn” was not the only one

Jin the film to draw objections.

Differ on Vulgarity

One source said words considered inoffensive in England may not be regarded as such in the United States and vice versa. He said the terms, “bum,” “punk,” “bloody” and “closet,” were examples of words removed from American films shown in England. The British expressions for shower bath and awakening a

{friend undergo the same deletion in

English films shown in the United States. The source said the disputed words were not as “scandalous” as the discussion would indicate, but were considered profane in this counfry and have not previously appeared on the American screen.

United Artists. As a member of the producers and distributors’ association, United Artists must abide by the association’s decision. At London, it was learned that the Two Cities Film Co. had cabled United Artists to cancel any scheduled showings of the film “until our attorney confirms that the Hays (Will Hays, president of the producers and distributors’ group) organization: has reconsidered its

WARNS AUSTRALIANS DEFENSE IS NEEDED

CANBERRA, Dec. 10 (U, P)— Australia must be prepared to repulse strong Japanese attacks by sea and air, Prime Minister John Curtin told parliament today. In a speech reviewing the war in the Southwest Pacific before the house of representatives, the prime minister said there was the closest and most harmonious co-operation between Gen. Douglas MacArthur and himself and among the commands of all allied nations forces in the South Pacific.
