DECATUR, Dec. 9 (U. P).—The tmpredictable Northedstern Indiana conference basketball race, often dominated by dark horses, is on
~ again, with the Bluffton Tigers and || Red ‘Devils, co-champions| apparently ||
Auburn of the 1941-42 season, the teams to beat.
And they both have been defeated |] already!” j
‘The- seven schools in fhe loop, |;
Auburn,’ Bluffton, Columbia City, Decatur, Garrett, Hartford City and
endallville, probably are as evenly |
matched, season after season, as any other coriference in the state. The greatest uncertainty, as seen from this angle, is whether or not the teams will complete the season schedule, because of the gasoline rationing. The schools already have eliminated reserve team preliminaries because of the mileage problem and with only private autos as transportation facilities, this may be. serious before the season’s end.
Bluffton Favored
Ranked solely on last season's performance and the number of returning veterans, the Bluffton Tigers probably should be rated as favorites for the conference title. Cochampion Bluffton lost only one regular, Edington,” a guard, from last year’s squad. Yet, the Tigers, after defeating both Auburn and Hartford City handily, suffered a severe trouncing from Columbia City, coached by Abe Devolt, dean of the loop’s basketball mentors with 16 years of service. Bluffton has a big team, with four veterans and a last-year reserve team member all topping the sixfoot mark. The Auburn Red Devils also have four veterans back from last season, backed by excellent reserves from last year’s second squad which lost only four games during the season, . 3 Coaches Debut . Three coaches are making their conference debut this season. They are: Daniel Perry, now at Decatur after two good years at Hoagland in Allen county; . Hubert Dubois, at Bluffton, after a year at Claypool and four years as athletic assistant at Celina, O., and Kenneth Dorton, at Hartford City, where he was assistant last year, Veteran coaches returning; in addition to Devolt at Columbia City, are: Keith Showalter, third year at Auburn; Charles Ivey, ninth year at Kendallville, and Cameron Parks, seventh year at Garrett.

Made Decision Here
Fitz quickly became an .outstanding kegler—competed in an American Bowling Congress tournament. Baseball was the means of his livelihood, however, so in 1923, while with Indianapolis, Fitz decided to save his arm for the diamond alone. It was not until after the world series of a year ago, when he became manager of alleys in Brooklyn and felt the better part of his baseball. career was behind him; that Fitz returned to bowling. ; Fitz, who has an average of. 200 and a 287 game to his credit, finished 17th in a large field of entrants in the New York eliminations. He did not believe he had a chance in such fast company. Fitz is 41, but bowling has kept him near his best pitching weight —215 pounds. Fat Freddie, by ‘he way, is not as corpulent as he is muscular, Because he feels that what he has picked up on his own alleys and from his friend, Joe Falcaro, world champion match game bowler, may help others, Fitzsimmons is going to

But the|— New York board decided to recognize the Larkin-Jack survivor as chanlipion, with the stipulation that he must defend his title against the winner of an elimination tournament of 13 eligible contenders.
Only Local Fans At Bowl Games
WASHINGTON, Dec. 9’ (U. P.)— The New Year's day bowl football games should be witnessed only by local fans and not by any of the competing teams’ “followers,” Defense Transportation Director Joseph B. Eastman ruled today. Seeking to hold holiday travel to a minimum, Eastman said he had wired sponsors of the Rose and Sugar Bowls that if they provide the competing teams with tickets for sale in their home communities, it would ‘be counter to requests he has made that their sale be allowed only in towns where the games are scheduled. “We must discourage enthusiasts, alumni and team followers from making - these trips this season,”
