How About Uniforms for Everyone?
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Times Special Writer
THERE'S A LESSON for women in the news of the court-ordered final dissolution of the Park avenue canteen in New York. “Instead of charity,” said the judge, “it was a species of self-aggrandizement; avarice masquerading as patriotism and service.” Few women, I think, are avari-
groups managed : by competent officials, with their membership serving our country humbly in its time of need, we have seen scores of small organizations spring up in different parts of the country. Knowing human nature, we are forced to believe that part of our passion for organization comes from the fact that most of us would rather boss than be bossed. I decided not long ago that I might be developing the middleaged mind, since it was such a strain for me to take the induction of women into the army and navy in my every-day stride. So I gave myself several curtain lectures and my mood began to soften. " t 4 ”
I WAS BEGINNING to feel human once again when my newspaper came forth with the announcement of another feminine military unit—the SPARS—and I'm right back where I started from. In times like these, when the taxyer faces ruin and the soldier faces death, it seems insane for us

Wouldn't it be simpler and fairer to put everybody into uniform, since we are told all citizens are fighters and since military dress is supposed to lift individual morale? Well, the civilian morale could do with some boosting right now, too. Maybe Uncle Sam ought to get Hattie Carnegie or Nettie Rosenstein or Nelly Don to work at thinking up something neat and snappy for the housewife. We, too, might feel more important in uniforms! oe —
