+ The French naval units, provided they have been kept in seaworthy condition by their crews, could be of immediate service to the allies. In view of the allegiatice te the united nations ‘of . Admiral. Darlan and Pierre Boisson, govern-general of French West . Africa, there is small doubt that the French crews would be willing to. operate the ships against the axis, ' .. The same does not hold true for the 15 French . warships which Navy" Secretary Frank Knox says Hitler acquired at Toulon. Their crews are extremely unlikely to be willing to fight for the ‘axis. operation would take some time. The allies are thus athwart the narrow part. of the Atlantic which provides such good hunting grounds for German : submarines operating against allied supply lines to Africa and around the Cape of Good Hope. Bombers bound for the battlefront also will have a shorter route across the Atlantic. Fighter planes, of which there is a manifest allied deficiency. in Africa, can be transported more easily by ship and flown across Algeria to the scene of action.

EX-CASHIER GIVEN

30-MONTH SENTENCE

Stacey C. Harrell, 55, former Bloomington, Ind., bank cashier, was sentenced to two and one-half years in prison yesterday after he admitted responsibility for a shortage of $11,000 in bank accounts. The sentence was imposed by Judge Robert Baltzell in federal court. Although Harrell admitted re~ sponsibility for a shortage of $11,000, federal officials said investigation by bank examiners showed a deficit of $17,000. In passing sentence, Judge Baltzell said he decided

against yielding to a plea of leni-|

ency because “the defendant has not told the whole truth.” Harrell was cashier of the Citizens

We will be glad to welcome her and we know that many Indiana people who hve enjoyed her in the films will want to see her in person and to meet her.”

| GAS RATION

BIDS JAM BOARDS

Applicants for rationed articles, particularly gasoline, were urged to | be a “little patient” by Alex L. Taggart, county rationing administra-| tor, today. Mr. Taggart said that mere than 50,000 applications have been filed for supplemental gas and for trucks and fleet cars. Additional requests also are being made for. sugar books so that applicants can buy coffee, he stated. “I hope the public will understand that we are working furiously and taking care of applications just as rapidly as possible,” he continued. “But the public must show a pretty fair degree of forbearance in these unsual times.” Mr. Taggart praised the volunteer workers, saying that “without their help we would have - been absolutely sunk.” : Applicants will have to be patient even when trying to get a telephone connection with their rationing boards, Mr. Taggart said.
