Billy Rose Presents Extravaganza

THE CIRCLE this week blossoms forth with Billy Rose's rine J tious “Diamond Horseshoe Revue,” with its lush and gaudy costuming, it’s six-foot showgirls: and its beef trust of four ladies who aggre-

gate about ‘a half ton.

The revue turns out to be vaudeville on a more lavish plane than we ordinarily see it around here. The chorus of handpicked lovelies

dance with some degree 'of certainty about what they are sup‘posed to do. The main event seems to be the startling antics of a team of acrobats who modestly call themselves “The Great, Yacopis.” Their stunt “is .catapulting one brother atop the shoulder of a second brother who already is standing on the shoulders of the two remaining brothers. That makes a: four-man column about 22 feet high. Gilda Gray, the veteran siren of | the screen, does the shimmy; Aunt Jemima sings a round of Gershwin songs, which is one of the highlights of the show, and Charles King of “The Broadway Melody” sings a medley of George M. Cohan numbers. Well hung together, the show revolves about scenes of former Broadway glory. Staging is excel-’ lent and a good pit band accompanies the show, which, compared to the stage shows that have gone before it, is extravaganza. ” n ”

PVT. ALEXANDER SLAGLE of the 83d division will he returning to old memories when he comes to the Illinois st. Service men’s center Monday nigh, with the Camp Atterbury benefit show, “We Did It Before.” Twenty-two years. ago, when the center was the home of the Manrerchor, he appeared there with the famous Princeton ‘Triangle club) show. After his Princeton days, Pvt. Slagle submerged his hankering after the stage to tl)¢ practical consideration of making a living, s0 he built up a real estate business in Baltimore. From time to time, though, that old hankering came back. Four years ago, finally, he joined the Baltimore Civic theater and there he rediscovered his baritone voice. Little by little, he gravitated into the professional theater until he wszs making enough money at i; to forget about real estate. Entertainers.

DES MOINES, Ia., Dec. 5 (U. P.). —Manager Pete De Cenzie of the Casino Follies burlesque theater needs a new strip tease star today to replace “the best entertainer in the show.” He lost his best box office attraction when officials at the Ft. Des Moines WAAC training center took Miss Kathryn Gregory, 22, Ft. Worth, Tex., a basic auxiliary absent without leave, back to the fort. For five nights, Miss Gregory, billed as “Amber d’Georg, the exotic

tertained Casino patrons in a repertoire of dances, including a “Sa-

moan Love Dance,” which revealed as much of her as city ordinances permit. Had a Good Figure

De Cenzie said he hired the pretty, brown-haired girl without knowing she was a WAAC. She had a good figure, was five feet, three inches tall and weighed 114 pounds. “She asked for a spot in our show,” De Cenzie said. “She talked our language, but I knew that Amber d’Georg was not her real name.” One of De Cenzie's girls was ill, so he, put Miss Gregory in the show without rehearsal. Records at the fort reveal that she had been a professiona] blues singer and an adagio dancer before joining the WAACSs on Nov. 3. She had forgotten nothing during her stay in the army and became an instant success, according to De Cenzie, who said she did a jungle dance, the conga and a futuristic number. “She was very clever,” he said regretfully. “She was the best entertainer in the show.”

Pictures Her Undoing

But publicity pictures outside the theater were her undoing. In one still, the rookie WAAC was posed in a sarong and little else. A girl friend recognized her and Col. J. A. Hoag, Ft. Des Moines commandant, and an MP ended her theatrical career for the duration. Discipline but not discharge awaited her at the fort. “She was just a girl who had no understanding of her responsibilities,” Hoag said.
