Take Fourth of 1943 Farm Crops.

CHICAGO, Dec. 4 (U. P.).—Agriculture Secretary Claud R. Wickard said today that military and lendlease yesterday had increased until they will take at least one-fourth

of the 1943 farm production. Mr. Wickard discussed 1943 food goals at’ a conference of federal agricultural agencies from 10 north central states. “Our task grows larger month by month,” Wickard said. “A month ago, we: figured that these military and lend-lease needs would take only one-fifth of the 1943 output.” Secretary Wickard said the fighting forces, our allies and domestic groups require a. total of 18 billion pounds more milk than scheduled in the 1943 goals but it can’t be produced.

Stresses 90 Per Cent Parity Plan

He stressed the importance of the farm price program through which the government undertakes to support for two years after the war a price of at least 90 per cent of parity on products for which war increases were asked. “Under this. program we will see to it that the price does not fall below $13.25 per hundredweight for the average of good and choice 240-270 pound hogs, Chicago basis,” Mr. Wickard said. “Thus the nation uses the powerful lever of price to lift hog production up to the very high goal of 15 per cent over the record of 1942.” He cautioned that farmers could not expect to get enough new machinery for maximum production and “not even enough for replaceemnts” during 1943 but they could expect a good supply of repair parts. He urged pooling of machinery as a solution,

MORE OLD RADIOS NEEDED FOR ARMY

The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce has issued another call for outmoded radios to be used by the army air forces for instructional

purposes. Nearly 500 discarded or unused radio sets were contributed by Indianapolis residents the last time the Chamber of Commerce appealed for them. The army air forces technical training command has notified the Chamber that the need is still great for old radios. Persons having radios they are willing to contribute should call the Chamber of Commerce. Pickups

P-38 MAK HOT FOR ENEMY

Allison - Engined Fighters Win High Praise of

Pilots in Africa.

(United Press Staff Correspond“ent John A. Parris has just returned to London from French North Africa, where he landed with ths first American troops and covered the first weeks of the occupation.)

By JOHN A PARRIS United Press Staff Correspondent LONDON, Dec. 4—American Lockheed Lightnings, new swift twin-Allison engined, twin-fuselaged fighters are “making it too hot for the other guy” in North Africa. Their spectacular performance has proved them excellent escort for heavy bombers and also firste rate strafing planes. Their pilots said they were “juss what the army ordered when is comes to ground strafing.” In general, the Lightnings are making their critics eat their words and have been tried out at everye thing except mass dog fighting—in which pilots believe they will hold their own with anybody’s fighter,

Operating daily on the Tunisian

front in co-operation with ground forces, the Lightnings ‘had little competition from the axis air force, but when they did encounter German fighters they usually got them or the Nazis ran, : They Come Home The Lightning P-38 is a single seater, with an engine in each of its noses — 2180-horse power liquide cooled Allison motors—with a cruise

ing speed of 350 miles per hour at

16,000 feet. It has two 30-caliber machine guns, two 50-caliber mae chine guns and a small cannon. “It’s the sweetest plane I ever saw in action,” one pilot said. “When you watch guys come home on one engine whereas if they were flying a single-engined fighter they would have lost a plane and possibly their life, you really begin to appreciate the P-38. | “It's faster than any other fighter we have seen and has good maneuverability at high altitude. Its fire power carries plenty of weight.”
