Wounded Barney Ross Says "War Is No One-Man Show
By CHARLES ARNOT United Press Staff Correspondent
WITH THE AMERICAN FORCES ON GUADALCANAL, Nov. 22— Delayed. —Barney Ross, once world lightweight and welterweight champfon, fought some 400 times in thé ring but he told me today that all those fights put together could not begin to compare with 14 hours of hell in a shellhole on the Matanikao River front two days ago. “The ring is kid's play comparéd with this battle out here,” Ross
told me. “This is 2 finish fight with no blows barred. There is no referee to break the clinches.” For staying in the front lines all night with three wounded marine companions in the face of terrific Japanese machine gum and shell fire, Ross has been promoted to corporal and his supérior officers have recommiended him for distinguished service honors. Ross not bnly stayed at the front while the Japanese attacked our position with every available weapon but he thréw every hind grenade he could find at thé enemy. It is estithated he killed at least 10 Japanese between dusk and dawn. 93 now and his templés » fire. yd ‘He joined the marine corps” ‘shortly after Pearl Harbor.
On Matanikao Fiver
Be told me his story from a cot in ¢t he hospital where le is recovering from a combination of malariaf ‘shell shock and minor shrap- | neéPwounds on his hanes and arms. “My “company of marines “was spearheading the attac) for & big , push above Matanikao river, five es. northwest of Henderson field,” he said. “We had pushed back the Jdps and were lying low, waiting for the army to take over when one of my buddies motioned to me.” He looked up and saw the first group of a large Japancse contingent moving slowly toward him through the jungle. Some of them wére not more than 10 yirds away. , “Everybody started firing and goattering, » said Ross. ‘The army didn’t have time to move up and dig in before the Japanese had set up their machine guns. He said the Japanesc fired all night. At dawn the army opened up with fts own machine guns. “As soon as it was light I jumped out of my hole behind a cloud of smoke from an exploding mortar ghell and dashed over to my pal who was hit in the leg. Two other soldiers were okay so I left them to 100k after a wounded marine.”
A Corporal Now Ross’ friend weighed about 215 pounds but he was about to atmpt to carry him to the rear hén he saw 4 stretcher bearer running toward the shell hole. The next person he saw was his commanding officer, Capt. O. K. LeBlane, Abbeville, La. “We made a strétcher and got my friend and the other féllow out of thé hole” Ross said. “Thén- by thalf-crawling and half-wa king we réached our main lines. Bullets were still coming a mile a minute,

Every seven or eight yards we fell flat on our faces? “The army guys meanwhile managed to get the other wounded marine to safety.” Ross said that when he got back to the rear LeBlanc fold him he was a corporal “as of now.” “Y was too sick to know just what he told me,” Ross said. “I had the shakes and chills. I have never felt worse. But I am glad that “heavy” Atkins, my friend, and the others got back okay. Asked about a citation, Ross said: “Tell ’em to give it to my company. This is no one man show.”
South Rajses Its Eyebrows
MONTGOMERY, Ala., Dec. 4 U. P.).—The Deep South raised a questioning eyebrow toddy when it learned that “Jefferson Davis” would represent the Yankees in the .annual North-South football game here Déc. 26. Especially in this Alabamg city, where Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy in the Civil
| war, established his first capital,
the question came in for considerable discussion, Lynn Waldorf of Northwestern, co-coach of the North team, signed Jefferson Davis, Missouri center, to play for the North. The argument was—first—that Missouri is a southern state, and— second—that a Jefferson Davis should never represent a Yankee group. ; Mayor Cyrus B. Brown, president of the Blue and Gray Cradle association, sponsors of the North-South game, admitted that, “the executive committee will have to pass on this.”
