Madison Cubs

Appear Tough

In Net Circles

AURORA, Dec. 4 '(U. P.).—For ‘the third straight season you can watch for Ray Eddy’s Madison Cubs to dominate hardwood proceedings in the Southeastern Indiana High School conference.

The Cubs have lost Big Bill Lodge but they are still a mighty tough outfit and their conference competition doesn’t look near up to par. If you remember last March, the Cubs and Aurora’s Red Devils finished one-two in this loop and then went on to the “sweet sixteen” where both were eliminated at Anderson. Aurora is down for the count already with four conference losses. Earl Overman, formerly of Indianapolis and Butler, coached for eight weeks before joining the army and now Herman Grinstead, his assistant, wil handle the team until a new man can be hired.

Win 31 Straight

The Cubs have a string of 31 victories in this loop and the boys who are extending it this season are: Andy Taff, Miller and Black of last year’s regulars, along with Klein and McKay. There are 13 teams in the conference now that Milan has been dropped following action at the annual meeting. Non-observance of conference rules and regulations was the reason for Milan’s ouster. However, its games will count for other conference members this season, Other teams are Corydon, Salem, Lawrenceburg, Scottsburg, Brownstown, Orleans, Austin, Paoli, Vevay, North Vernon and Batesville,

Corydon’s Prospects Dark Jim Gridley of Indiana university’s “point a minute men” of 1941 is handling affairs at Corydon but has dark prospects this season. Paul Ewing, former Auroran, has a tough schedule at North Vernon and has already bowed to the Cubs. Bud Bateman still is coaching the Lawrenceburg Tigers and has the best chances of stopping the Cubs’ winning streak with a big, experienced team. Hamold Anson at Batesville has a weak loop schedule and only a fair team. Salem has knocked off Aurora but that doesn’t indicate that. Salem will go far this year. Transportation worries are besetting all the schools more than ever,

- | but all concerned are going to try

to fill all schedules and some games already have been moved up to save long trips.

Divorce?

Mrs. DiMaggio At Reno Hotel

RENO, Nev., Dec. 4 (U.P.).—Mrs. Joe DiMaggio, former actress Dorothy Arnold, is in Reno today, presumably to establish residence to permit filing a divorce suit against hep. husband, the hard-hitting New York Yankee outfielder. Miss Arnold has engaged an attorney, but she refused to allow him to discuss her business in Reno. The attorney, Joseph P. Haller, confirmed that he bad been retained by her. “My lips are sealed,” he said last night. “See me in the morning.” Miss Arnold secluded herself at her hotel. At San Francisco, DiMaggio said he knew nothing of reports his bride of three years intended to sue for divorce. Asked if he knew she was in Reno, he said: “It's my business where she is ‘and what she’s doing.” He refused to comment further, Miss Arnold’s action follows the customary procedure of celebrities seeking a quiet divorce. She arrived Tuesday and went to the Riverside hotel. In six weeks, she can get a streamlined divorce in about five minutes unless DiMaggio should contest. DiMaggio refused to say if he would contest an action should she start one.

rence and Franklin at Butler headline Monday night’s card, with Purdue marking time until Thursday night before opening against Wabash. Rose Poly has decided to drop basketball this year because of manpower and fransportation difficulties. Keogan’s power against Western Michigan tonight will be centered in Bobby Faught, 6-foot-4 center who set a Madison Square garden record of 26 points last season, and Johnny Niemiera and Charlie Butler. Keogan lost Capt. Art Pope, Frank Quinn, George Sobek, Cy Singer and John: Hiller from last year, and Bobo Fisher will be graduated Dec. 20. : McCracken’s fast-breaking hoopsters this year will have abundant scoring material, with Big Ed Denton back in the lineup along with forwards Johnny Logan and Ervin (Scooter) Swanson. These seniors will be supplemented by Ralph Hamilton, Warren Lewis and Dick Wittenbraker, juniors who saw lots of action last year.

DePauw’s Tigers sunk Ft. Knox, 49-37, in their opener, and turn to I. U. with a record of five won and five lost against the Hoosiers in the last 10 meetings. The DePauw attack is keyed on the sniping of Wally Etcheson, junjor forward from Bainbridge, Ind.,

ou who tallied 16 points against Ft. oa | Knox.
