That was the battle in which Ensign (now Lieut. jg) George H. Gdy Jr. was the lone survivor of 15 torpedo pilots who took off from their carrier thé morning of June 4 to look for a Jap carrier. Fourteen planés and 29 men, including Ensign Willidm R. Evans of Indianapolis, faileq t6 return. When the marines stormed into the southern Solomons Aug. 7, squadron eight was there, paving the way for the landing parties with fyrious attacks on the Jap positions, and blasting the important causeway connecting Gavutu island with Tanambogo. On Aug. 24 the men, flying Grumman avengers, scored threé htis on a Japanese carrier, leaving it dead in the water dnd listing badly, and bétween Aug. 24 and Nov. 7 the outfit was credited with scoring nine torpedo hits on Jap cruisers.
