U.S. Debt in Gold Is 54% Feet Wide

WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 (U. P.). —Amateur statisticians have had fun figuring what the public debt looked like when it hit $100,000,000,000 this week. Treasury experts have the answer: $100,000,000,000 in gold, figured at $35 an ounce, would make a solid block slightly mere than 54% feet on a side. In silver, at 45 cents an ounce, it would make a block 285 feet on a side. -P. S.—Those figures already are

out-of-date. The debt now exceeds $102,000,000,000.

WOOD IN AIRPLANES PROVES A SUCCESS

By Science Service

NEW YORK, Dec. 4—Use of wood in America’s planes is steadily advancing in both quantity and quality, Dr. Robert J. Nebesar, chief engineer of the Universal Moulded Products Corp., reported at the meeting of the American Society of

‘Mechanical Engineers here.

Aircraft with wooden fuselages and other parts have been shown to withstand shock and vibration very satisfactorily. “Both servicing and repairs are inexpensive and comparatively easy to take care of,” Dr. Nebesar declared, “these presenting no engineering problems.”
