Reporter on Tunisian Front Tells of Perils in News

Gathering and the Joy

Coupled With Red Wine.

WEST OF TUNIS, Nov. 28 (Delayed) .—Now on Saturday, Nov. 28, we are still sitting in the hills, west of Tunis, waiting for something decisive to happen and, meanwhile, trying to make ourselves comfortable. During the day we drive as near as it seems possible to what seems to be the front with frequent flops into ditches when Messerschmitts come over. At night we listen to radio news from London regarding

the local situation, try to fill our bellies, and retire, three to a bed, in a French farmhouse. ] The only gunfire we hear is produced by fighters strafing us or nearby targets, or engaging in dogfights high-in the sky. Occasionally, we get tidbits of news from some headquarters or other, but none of it is very important and be= sides it will be on the BBC news program before we can even find a . dispatch rider to take it back to the airdrome from which it.can £ ! flown to some Mr. Stoneman’ ni where -the ‘censor can operate on it and finally send it in easy stages back to the ‘home offices.

“Luck of the Devil”

: It was on the afternoon of Thanksgiviig day, while our troops and the British were engaging in a fencing match 2 few miles to the east, that. our little party of. four ‘correspondents Had a real occasion ‘to render thanks. Our diary from ithen on tells the tory. Thanksgiving cay, 7 p. m.t "We had, this afternoon, the luck of ‘the devil ‘We foun! a farm and & Frenchman who agreed to let: us .sleepin his room: tonight. : Now he has just produced the best Thanksgivic 1 dinner of all, ‘the big owl ‘of hot lentil soup, a .great:@ish of chacjouks—eggplant and’ tomatoes fried in oil with eight ‘golden eggs on ton, a ‘platter of excellent. spaghetti, fine salad, cream cheese and dates, with four bottles ‘of fragrant light wine. Friday, 9 a. m., we all slept for 11 hours. Now in brilliant sunlight we can see a big dive-bombing attack developing on a nearby town. “There must be a dozen or 18 {Mmikers-87's and ME-109's. Now| ;they. are strafing the Bej—Medaz- | -El-Bab road—There is a terrific ex plosion as a bomb drops. Now three ‘fighters are mixing it and one is «down in flames just beside the road with a thundering crash. . At 10 a. m., we are told that there was a big tank fizht on the Bajar Mateur road during the night in : which we knocked out seven Ger‘man Mark-IV’s and six Mark-III’s and Mark-II's for the loss of one . American light 2nd two British « medium tanks. 7he Germans are ‘reported to have Some Mark-I’s i fixed with 88-run. guns around : here somewhere. : We have occupied Tebourba during the night.

Find Refuge in Ditch

¢ At 11:30 a. m, on the road to : Tebor there are pnlanes overhead and we take to a ditch; 11:45, we ‘ take to a diteh ag:in but they are only spitfires, so wo proceed; noon, i six planes are machine-gunning . something up north—te quote an ‘ artilleryman’ who says that three German tanks are |00se ‘Somewhere : ahead. © Three more Messerschmitts are « strafing Tebourba. f At 2:05 p. m. a Messerschmitt i. came right over without spotting us; : 3:10 back at the farm, two Messerschmitts are over the house as we . are preparing the car for the 50th - time, but they don’t seem to have

come near; 7:10, BBC quotes the New York radio as saying that we are within 10 miles of Tunis—it's pure news to us. Another night: I made corned beef hash for the farmer and our party and it was very good particularly with more of that nice wine. Saturday, 7:45 a. m.: They are over for their daily morning shot at Beja and the roads. There is much banging but we cannot see any

damage. “Air Full of Motors”

At 9:15: The air is full of motors but we are tired stretching our necks and are proceeding with our breakfast. Maybe we’ll hear about it on the radio. We'll make another attempt to find the front today if we can get

weather -is beautiful and everybody well. The war situation is slightly vague. Tunisia will always stand out in ‘the. memory of those who have visited it these trying days as a land of ferocious dogs and deep ditches. The ditches of Tunisia seem to have been designed for this particular campaign. No.matter where ‘a Messerschmitt happens to catch you along the road, you can find a hole at least three feet deep and it is matter of record that most of the people who have been wounded by strafing have been hit in that part of the body which is most exposed when on one’s hands and knees, or flat on one’s belly: We were only caught once without a ditch nearby and that was the time all four of us nearly caught it. Our car bears one noble hole in its flank as a souvenir of that party. The ditches are pretty muddy and by this date our uniforms, which were pretty motley to begin with are just so many dirty clothes. Our present attitude is that we would rather bé safe than Sanitary.
