U.S. AND FILPINO
FORCES STILL HOLD
Japs Start Series of Broadcasts Telling of ‘Annihila-
broadcasts.
States and Philippines forces were even able to patrol the coasts of the islands to watch for Japanese landing parties. There was every indication that the defense must be under the command of high officers because of
Furthermore, Japan admitted, the defenders were still getting recruits from the Philippines population. For some reason not apparent, unless it was to report a victory however small, the Japanese started yesterday to broadcast reports about the Philippines.
Claim Annihilation
First Japanese imperial headquarters said that “since the complete occupation of the Philippines, Japanese troops have annihilated the majority of the remnants of the Americans and Filipinos who fled into mountainous regions.” Next it was said that the “remnants” existed in “other inuccessible parts” of the islands. Then came the revelation today that the Japanese army and navy were both in action in an attempt to hold down the American and Filipino troops. A special dispatch by one Yoshimoto Kanal, a Domel news agency correspondent “with the navy aboard a Japanese warship,” said that the defenders were “still holding out in the Visayan islands in the vain hope that reinforcements would be forthcoming to them from the United States.” The Visayan islands are those ‘around the Visayan sea in the central Philippines. = «
Admit U. S. Resistance
The Domel correspondent disclosed that the United States and Philippines forces were resisting in the islands of Panay, Cebu and Leyti, among others, in addition to the smaller Visayans, “taking advantage of the steep mountains.” “The American-Filipino marauders, disseminating reports that American reinforcements are forthcoming, have been instigating the ignorant natives into resistance against the Japanese and recruiting them to replenish their gradually diminishing ranks,” the correspondent complained. . “About half of them dre said to be armed with machine guns, rifles, automatic rifles and native swords.
“They keep canoes and small sailing boats patrolling strategic shores to warn them against the appear- | ance of the imperial forces so they can flee into the jungles to dodge Japanese attack.
Turned Back at Laz
“But intensified landing operations by the Japanese naval and army forces have been resulting in their gradual decimation.
“The Japanese have experienced only one case of considerable enemy resistance, iA landing at Lazi, on Siquidor island, where the enemy were entrenched behind sand bag barricades, protected by three-fold wide entanglement fences. In this battle the enemy were routed, leav‘ing 40 bodies.”

GASISUSED AS FUEL
IN NEW LOCOMOTIVE
By Science Service » 4 NEW YORK, Dec. 4.—A shooting = stream of gas is used to drive the = first gas-turbine locomotive which was described at the meeting of the American Society of Mechani« cal Engineers here by Paul R. Sid« ler of New York, resident engineer of Brown, Boveri & Co., Ltd. Built for the Swiss FederalaRail= ways, the new-t, locomotive has not been tested hs thoroughly as desired because of fuel shortage and war conditions. But enough road tests over various tracks have been ] made, Mr. Sidler pointed out, to, demonstrate that the gas-turbine locomotive not only came up to ex= pectations but surpassed them in some respects. : ’ For certain uses it shows marked advantages over the Diesel, but in general it is not yet a serious come petitor. X “It should be particularly suitae ble for express service over long dise tances,” Mr. Sidler maintained, “in areas where water is scarce and where there is a considerable difference in tha costs of Diesel oil as against ordinary fuel oil.”
