Extending Man’s .Prime to 70 Years Is Goal of New Study.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn, Dec. 3 (U. P.)—The new medical science of geriatrics answering the wartime call for older workers, has set out to stretch the prime of man’s life into the 60 and 70-year-old age brackets, a study, by the Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. reveals, : The work of geriatrics is to protect the normal, healthy aging process, the report says, explaining that there is no reason why the average man or woman cannot. be vigorous, happy and sucBessful at 65, 70 or even BO. The study finds that of approxi- | mat«gy 18,000,000 American men 45 or older, 14,000,000 are now at work. But of the remaining 4,000,000, three men out of four are unfit to work because of ill health or other disability, and many of the 14,000,000 cansgive only limited service.
No Gain After 50
The report shows that while millions more Americans now live to the age of 65 and beyond, there has been little improvement in their general health after 50. The average life span is longer because of medical achievements in tombating the diseases of infancy and youth, consequently there has been a steady increase in the number of helpless, disabled oldsters in the United States. Diet fads and psychology are two important ‘contributory causes to premature aging, the study says. Many men, reaching the age of 60 or 65, take it for granted they ‘are “washed up,” and the life insurance firm's study shows that this atttiude itself brings on a rapid decline. The report suggests, also, that if a normal, appetizing diet disagrees with the older person, he needs a doctor, not some freakish diet suggested by well-meaning friends. Medical research in preventive geriatrics is now underway to develop a program of special health education for persons between 40 and 60, the report says, so they will take proper care of themselves during - that vital period of preparation for normal, healthy aging.
45-Group Rises
Indicated for the near future, the study shows, is the development of special vocational education for the aged, so they can take advantage of thelr changing powers and retain their independence. The report says the importance of geriatric is revealed in the fact that in 1900, persons 45 years old or over in the United States comprised slightly over one-sixth of our entire population, while in 1940 this age group had expanded to include more than one-fourth of the, total population. Between 1930 and 1940, the report says, U. S. population aged 65 or over rose from 6,600,000 to nearly ' 9,000,000, an increase of 35 per | cent, while the general population was increasing only 7 per cent.

Willkie Would Hush Diplomats
NEW YORK, Dec. 3 (U.P). — Wendell L. Willkie, interviewed yesterday by a group of Mexican and Bolivian newspapermen, said that the good neighbor policy appears to be based upon “pretty adjectives” rather than on practical realities. Foreign policy, he said, should not be based solely. on eulogies between the countries involved, but should develop an economicsocial plan to raise the standard of living in each. Toward that end he suggested elimination of trade barriers and equitable distribution of raw materials. Asked by a Mexican newspaperman for his attitude toward the control of foreign policy through investments of capital, Willkie replied: “I suppose one country entering another with its . superior economic power in order to dominate it politically.”
PLYWOOD RELATIONS TO PLANES STUDIED
By Science Service
NEW YORK, Dec. 3.—Plywood planes are assuming increasing. importance in the development of wartime aviation, and a special committee of aviation leaders, wood technology and other sciences involved in building wings out of wood has been organized to cope with problems arising in the industry. foul Prof. Alexander Klemin of New York university, chairman of the new committee, announced its formation before a meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers here yesterday. In the same address he pointed out some of the advantages of plywood construction which have led to the recent revival of this type .of plane. Plywood planes, Prof. Klemin stated, are really not new. Plywood was one of the earliest materials used in airplane building. During the first world war fuselages and wings with plywood skins were successfully built both in the United States and France. Subsequently, Anthony Fokker, famous Dutch designer, built many plywood planes here for mail and air transport uses. The glue was not decay-proof, however, and when a disastrous accident overtook one of Fokker’s planes, plywood construction | fell into disfavor and aluminum alloys took the lead away from it.
GUFFEY BACKS PLAN SIMILAR TO RUML'S
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 3 (U. P.).— Senator Joseph F. Guffey (D., Pa.) announced yesterday that he would press for adoption of a pay-as-you-go income bill, similar to the Ruml plan, when the new congress convenes Jdn. 3. “I am convinced that we cannot stand the shock of collecting the income tax of 1942 and the income tax of 1943 in the year 1943,” Senator Guffey: declared. He said he had conferred with Senator Walter George (D., Ga.), chairman of the senate financé committee, and that he “favors this or a similar plan.” “We have either got to forgive, postpone, delay or defer the income taxes due for 1942,” said the Pennsylvania senator, who also is a member of the finance committee. , !
