Former Resident Dies in Chicago

MRS. KATE VARNEY of Amherst, N. }1, and a former resident of Indianapolis, died late Saturday evening in Chicago while visiting her son. She was 67. Mrs, Varney was born in Indianapolis, June 21, 1875, and lived here until 20 years ago when she and her husband moved to Florida. Mr, Varney died there. She was a member of the Society of ‘Indiana Pioneers and & member of the Indianapolis Orphans’ Home board. Survivors are two sons, Edward Porter Varney of Amherst and Gordon E. Varney of Chicago; a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Varney Cannon of Amherst, and two sisters, Mrs, Frank E. Jeleff of

Washington and Mrs. Anne Porter Pangborn of Indianapolis.

J. HARRY O'BRIEN RITES TOMORROW

Services for J. Harry O'Brien, past exalted ruler of the Indianapolis lodge of Elks, will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock'at SS. Peter and Paul cathedral. He was 67. He died Saturday evening at his home, 1443- N. Pennsylvania st.

Mr. O’Brien was chief clerk for the city engineering depattment under Mayor Holtzman. He was a member of the Elks and The Grand Lodge of Past Exalted Rulers. For the past five years he had been associated with Dr, R. N. Harger in manufacturing and selling the Harger drunkometer. \ Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Katherine O'Brien; a sister, Mrs. Adelaide Callahan; and a niece.

EBER BENNETT'S RITE TOMORROW

Central Rubber Salesman Ill Short Time; Veteran Of World War I.

Eber J. Bennett, veteran of world war I and Indianapolis resident 23 years, died yesterday in United States Veterans’ hospital following a brief illness. He was 52. Mr. Bennett was a native of Paw Paw, Mich. He was employed formerly as a salesman for the Berry Bros., Inc., paint ‘manufacturers of Detroit, Mich., and became a salesman for the Central Rubber & Supply Co. here a year ago. During world war I, Mr. Bennett served in northern Russia. He was a member of the Polar Bears associ-

ation in Detroit, an organization of veterans who served in Russia; Indianapolis post 13, American Legion; Ancient and Accepted Order of Scottish Rite, Valley of Detroit, and Friendship lodge, F. & A. M,, Detroit. Survivors are ‘his wife, Mrs. Ruth Bennett; a daughter, Mrs. Jean Adel Pierce, and a son, Richard, both of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Cora Cole of Paw Paw, Mich., and two brothers, Dr. C. L. Bennett of Kalamazoo, Mich., and E. D. Bennett of Detroit. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p. m. tomorrow in the Shirley Bros. funeral home. Burial will be Thursday in Home cemetery, Paw Paw, Michigan.

County Unit of

Indianapolis civic and benevolent organizations will participate this year in fund-raising activities for polio victims. The 11th annual campaign of the Marion county chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, Inc., was begun yesterday noon at an executive committee meeting at Riley hospital. Mrs. Louis R. Markun, county executive council member, presented a $750 check to A. B. Good, business manager of city schools, and Mrs. Georgia S. Rost, principal of the James E. Roberts school. .Other grants were $2300 to the City hospital and $3695 to the Riley hospital. Governor Schricker and city May-or-elect Tyndall attended yesterday’s meeting along with other state and county government officials.

Foundation Opens Campaign

The campaign closes Jan. 30, President Roosevelt's birthday. Last year the county chapter raised $23,000. He closed his offices here in the Hume-Mansur building last September to accept a directorship of Red Cross medical and health services of the Midwest. From 1935 until Oct. 1 he was chief of the Indana state board of health bureau for maternal and child health. He also had been acting director of the division of services for crippled children in the state welfare department. Dr. Mettel was a member of the Indianapolis Medical society of Marion county and the American Board of Pediatrics. He was single and lived at the Indianapolis Athletic club. His only immediate survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mettel of Connersville. The body .will be interned in a mausoleum in Connersville.
