Fatalities Drop One-Third In State, Almost Half In Nation.

of this year 49 per cent lower throughout the nation than last year, Indiana stood fourth in the list of states having reductions in traffic deaths so far this year. For the first 10 months of this year, 'ndiana recorded a decline of 33 per cent in traffic deaths. Ahead of Indiana were New Hampshire , With # 55 per cent reduction; Wyoming, 53 per cent, and South Dakota, 9 per cent. The figures weré released by the National Safety council, which reportec that 2000 persons were killed throu hout the nation in October, a reduc ion of 1960 from the October, 1941, figure. A 27 per cent reduction vas reported nationally for the first 10 months of the year, with a 1942 (otal of 23,290 deaths, com-

‘Hate’ Reports Are Found Most Numerous in OWI

Analysis.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (U. P.).— The office of war information today warned the public to distinguish between repetition of a rumor and expression of honest opinion, following analysis of more than 4500 rumors reported to various federal agencies isnce Pearl Harbor. “Hate rumors” were found to be by far the most numerous in the OWI study. Those expressed prejudice of hostility for groups other than the enemy.

Targets included the army administration, business, Catholics, defense workers, draft bpards, the English, farmers, Jews, labor and unions, Negroes, profiteers, the Red Cross blood donor service, and Russia. :

Little relation was found between specific rumors and enemy propaganda appeals. Enemy shortwave broadcasts reach a very small American audience and have been largely ignored by the public.

Suggest Rumor Lines

They do suggest rumor “lines” to enemy agents and sympathizers in this country, however, who plant and encourage rumors to aid enemy propaganda objectives. False information carried by hate rumors is less important than the fact that they sharpen existing domestic social and economic problems, OWI said. That is part of enemy “divide and conquer” strategy in setting up group against group. Factual denials are of little good in stopping hate rumors.

1] Persons who feel certain hatreds will readily believe and repeat any rumor supporting that hatred. The only real answer is to cure the cause of the hatred, OWI said.
