“THE NAVY COMES THROUGH,” in which the war is somewhat subordinated to a personal feud between Pat O’Brien and George Murphy, opened at the Circle yesterday. It’s a fast-moving sea story with never a dull moment. Something is either happening or going to happen. When Messrs. O’Brien and

Guitarist Gomez is probably responsible for the duller moments of the evening, although I have no doubt he’s the one of the world’s best, as Mr. Veloz claims. He plays a series of South American melodies whose complex rhythms and harmonies are not too well understood in this country outside a small circle of connoisseurs of Latin - American music, ;

” The Rhumba MISS ORTEGA sings delightfully for her part. But Jerry Shelton’s accordion program is too long for an accordion program, although his work is excellent. The dance team is accompanied by the two pianos and the accoruion and performs on a stage barren except for a light, brown carpet. The trick Veloz and Yolanda have of admiring each other lends a particular and exquisite charm to their performance. They are always in seeming perfect physical and emotional rapport. Their repertoire leans toward Latin-American dances. They do a Cuban rhumba called “The Son,” which is particular rhumba dance, not the real rhumba dance, but a form of it. It has its moments. Mr. Veloz explains that the dance we know as the rhumba is not the rhumba, but simply our adaptation of the dance Cuban Negroes invented which is something too wild to put on a public dance floor. Their program includes a waltz and several specialty dances, including their impressions of: hav=

merry-go-round, one of the high spots of the evening. They also do the “Tango Yolanda,” which they performed in the film, “Pride of the Yankees.” Their dancing has the magnetic quality ,of dramatic pantomime. This team has never been less than splendid in the years it has performed. During the program, Mr. Veloz does all of the talking with Yolanda standing charmingly by, holding her husband’s hand with both of her own. At the conclusion of the program, he thanks the audience and informs them that Yolanda will have the last word. She says: “Good night.”

ond class seaman. Fate, or Hollywood, brings him into the gun crew headed by Chief Petty Officer O’Brien whose testimony during the probe forced Murphy out of the service.

Romantic Problems

It seems that Murphy likes O'Brien's sister (Jane Wyatt) but O’Brien wants his sister to marry a fellow named O'Connor. The gun crew is ‘assigned to man the gun of a freighter bound for Belfast. En route to raise convoy, the gun crew battles a sub and one man aboard is injured. A physician and a nurse come aboard from the convoy. Naturally, the nurse is O’'Brien’s sister (Jane Wyatt). Well, to make the picture interesting, the freighter has to drop out of convoy so that the wounded man can be operated on, which sounds

the trouble starts. The vessel nar-

battleship in the fog, fights off a plane attack, and then changes its course at the whim of Mr. O'Brien to capture a German supply ship.

Gun Crew Deserts

The fact that the gun crew has been assigned by the U. S. navy to protect the freighter carrying a valuable cargo of munitions doesn’t seem to weigh too heavily upon the makers of this picture, for they have the gun crew desert the freighter in mid-Atlantic for the sport “of trapping enemy submarines. The crew goes aboard the cap-

tured supply ship, dons Nazi uni-|§

forms and proceeds to supply visiting Nazi subs with torpedoes doctored with time bombs. Pretty neat. The subs no sooner cast off and submerge than, Bang! This little deception, of course, is made possible by the presence of an anti-Nazi American sailor who poses as the Nazi commander because he speaks German. One fine day; the commander of a sub coming up for supplies recognizes the anti-Nazi American sailor as the Austrian the gestapo has hunted for years. They Sink the Sub

So it’s a fight to the finish and the gun crew sinks the sub in a blaze of gunfire. Had it not been

{for the sub commander getting

wise, the crew might have sailed on to sink the whole enemy undersea fleet. But, well, Hollywood has

to stop somewhere, and this seems to be as good a place as any, on account of the picture is almost finished. So, the Rover boys return to port, the fact that they have deserted their posts being kindly overlooked in view of the great damage they have wrought. Murphy is reinstated and wins O’Brien’s sister. Last scene, he and O’Brien are training a new gun crew and you get the idea that this crew ought to be able to finish the German navy, now that O’Brien

‘and Murphy are on good terms.
