‘Umbrellas’ of Wire Protect Munitions Plants Fon Lightning’ s Explosive Peril
y DAVID DIETZ Scripas-Howard Science Editor Explosives plants and oil storage centers need their “umbrellas” as surely as do battleships at sea.
Whereas the battleship requires am umbrella of fighter planes, a system of| wires does the trick for For it. is lightning that these plants need protection from, The “umbrella” developed by Dr. Gilbert D. McCann, lightning expert of the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co., is simplicity itself, but it works. It consists simply of a steel wire strung above the protected and
anchored on tgll wood poles at each end. The wire is connected by other wires to steel rods buried in the ground. Dr. McCann’s method of affording lightning protection to plants follows the plan developed 12 years ago at the Westinghouse laboratories by the late Dr. Charles L. G. Fortescue for the protection of crosscountry power lines. Dr. Fortescue’s method, now in general use, consisted in stringing a single wire on the poles above the power lines. This wire at intervals was connected to the ground. Because it was the highest wire of the group and because it provided
the quickest and simplest path for the lightning to the ground, this “grounded wire,” as electrical engineers call it, protected the power lines from the danger of lightning stroke. Westinghouse engineers point out that Dr. McCann's method is not superior to the more traditional lightning rod, but that it saves critical materials. To protect an average plant with lightning rods requires about 250 pounds of copper for the rods, conductors and ground plates. The new umbrella for the same plant calls for 60 pounds of steel wire and two wood poles.

That lightning is a very real menace to an explosives plant or oil center is emphasized by Dr. McCann. “Our studies show that each square mile of sky hurls about ten thunderbolts at the ground each year,” he said. - “A modern ordnance plant, having several hundred buildings spread over a large area, is likely fo become a target for lightning several times a year. One direct hit on a building might cause a disastrous explosion or fire.” An even more comprehensive plan of protection than the single wire, Dr. McCann says, is to surround the building with six wood
