STEEL FAMINE

‘inexhaustible’ Mesabi Ores May Be Used Up Soon, Says Expert.

Times Special

CLEVELAND, Nov. 26.—History of big business In the Midwest, and of the steel foundation on which the present standard of living has been erected in America, began with discovery just 50 years ago of iron ore

in what appeared to be inexhaustible

quantities. Although iron had been found in

. | the Lake Superior region some 90

years ago, it was not until the Mesabi range was opened up, in 1892, that iron began to revolutionize industry and commerce in the Great Lakes area. Indiana's Calumet region, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Toledo, Buffalo, Youngstown, Pittsburgh and many other. centers of industry depend largely on low-cost iron ore

Lakes.

there is deep concern over the possibility that our supply of easily mined, easily used iron ore may be exhausted in this generation.

Careless With Our Riches

agreement all these years that we had a superabundance of ore. Magnanimously, we sent millions of tons and Italians. Just so much junk, and the foreigners could use it. Now, as we are about to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first iron ore ever shipped from the] Mesabi range in Minnesota, it is| dawning upon war production officials,, the steel industry and the

exhaustible supply of iron ore in

from the Lake Superior region and |! cheap transportation on the Great|-

Minnesota. Unless something is

“lean” ore, that is, containing less than 51 per cent metallic iron, we ||GT may feel the pinch of an iron-ore! shortage in the next six or seven | years. Authority Yor this view is E. W. Davis, University of Minnesota ex- | pert, who made an analysis of Lake Superior reserves early this year. He reported that known reserves of commercial-grade iron ore amount to 1,291,911,000 tons, more than 1,000,000,000 tons of which is in the Mesabi. 75 Million Tons Yearly

These _figures, are based on tax

{pay taxes on known ore reserves in ithe ground. Consequently the fig-

records. The mining companies

ures may be somewhat conservative, Mr. Davis reported, but in his opinion, reserves could not be more than 10 per cent above jhe estimate. | The point of the Davis report is | that only 557,000,000 tons of this reserve is flexible, that is, easily extracted. At a liberal estimate, adding 10 per cent, this could be boosted to 600,000,000 tons. The remainder of the Mesabi reserve is in underground ore and “concentrates.” The easily worked open-pit ore is being extracted at a rate of about 75,000,000 tons a year. Besides the commercial-grade ore reserve of 1,200,000,000 tons, there is a vast reserve of leaner ore, nobody knows how much, but “almost unlimiedt” is the description given by M. D. Harbaugh, vice president of the Lake Superior Iron Ore association. Low-grade Ores Are Key

If the Lake Superior iron-ore industry is to continue supplying most of the needs of the iron and steel industry (currently around 90 per cent), Mr. Harbaugh said, “it will be necessary to develop processes and plants for concentrating large tonnages of the almost unlimited supply of low-grade ores available in the district.” This supports the Davis analysis, which points out that the production of underground ore and concentrates cannot be expanded with present equipment. Open-pit ore production can be expanded readily by adding more power shovels. That’s just what has been done to produce this year’s tonnage, expected to reach about 90,000,000 by the time ice stops lake traffic. ,
